I had been hearing a lot of great things about Mellow Mushroom, but for some reason, I never think to go there.

It was Monday night. It was Labor Day. This was a double whammy when trying to find an open restaurant. Then MM popped into my head. I was sure they'd be open...and they were!

We went to the location on Oak Street. I really liked the vibe of the place. Kind of cool funky. There were 2 floors of seating, and also a balcony for dining outside. Unfortunately we were unable to eat outside, as it had been raining off and on.

The service was top notch. Everyone we came in contact with was very nice and beers were refilled quickly...which is always a good thing. Speaking of beer...they had a really good beer selection, and they also have a Beer Club.

Now for the food...

I ordered a Caesar salad. It was really good! Good lettuce to dressing ratio. Delicious, fresh croutons. And shavings of parmesan cheese. I'm also pretty sure that the dressing contained anchovy paste, as it should! YUM!

Everyone that mentions MM to me, says that the Holy Shitake pizza is the best. I'm a mushroom luvuh, so I took their advice and went with that. I added bacon to it. First off, I wanted some meat on my pizza, and secondly...well...bacon makes everything better. And it's drizzled with a garlic aioli! Can't go wrong with that.

O.M.G! This pizza was amazing! The flavors all went well together and the crust was delicious as well.

We also tried the Thai pizza. It was good, but not great. The veggies on the pizza could've been cooked a little more, and overall I expected it to have more of a curry taste. It also had a sweetness to it. Too sweet for my taste. It just didn't seem "Thai" at all to me.

I would absolutely go back to Mellow Mushroom. I will always get the Caesar salad, and I'll always get the mushroom pizza. Each time I go, I'll also try a different one. But I have a feeling the Holy Shitake will always remain my favorite.

I do have to note though...even though I loved the Holy Shitake pizza, if I were really in the mood for pizza, it wouldn't satisfy my craving. To satisfy a true pizza craving, I'd have to go with a traditional red sauce and pepperoni.

Nice review.

I really enjoyed the Mushroom by LSU campus when I was in college. They had great beer specials. 2-4-1 Thursday till 7 on all their drafts and they had some decent drafts.

Not a fan of MM's crust. Too hard (rather than tender-crisp), too oily, too "bready" along the edges. The Oak location is a nice combo of resto/bar and I think it will be well supported by area college students. But I'll go elsewhere for my pizza...IMO, if you're looking for "american" style pizza in the UPT/Uni area, Reginelli's is the better choice.

Good to know. I wonder if the Oak St. location has the same special. I'll have to look into that.

I don't like Reginelli's at all.

I didn't find MM's crust hard at all. It was the perfect blend of crisp and tender.

If I'm looking for more traditional, thin crust pizza, Slice is my favorite.

In Mid City, I really like Mid City Pizza (formerly Lazaros). I also like that it's walking distance from my house. Sometimes (2 a.m.) this is actually a bad thing!

In all honesty, I don't patronize either of those, except at someone else's behest. I'd rather have Ancora, Pizza Delicious, or Domenica. I'm eagerly awaiting Domenica Pizzeria's opening....

I've been a few times to the location in Metairie. I thought the pizza was ok, but the atmosphere in the place is really great.

They seem to have it together with their staff and training, etc. The bartenders were on their game and I appreciated the 12 or so taps with plenty of local beer.

I love Domenica...don't get me wrong. But it's not traditional. I LOVE pizza...so there's a ton in New Orleans that I really like.

I even like the Thursday night $5 pizza at Witt's Inn.

I've only had Pizza Delicious once and I wasn't impressed. But in all fairness, someone picked it up and brought it home and it wasn't hot enough. Pizza not being piping hot ruins it for me.

Maybe not "American" traditional, but Domenica's pizza is certainly Italian traditional in crust texture, lightly applied toppings, and in most of the ingredient combos. Ditto for Ancora.

That's funny, the crust is the only reason I go to MM for pizza.

It's a chain, that is what they do best. They have a tried and true system and know how to implement it.

OP-I'm curious, how was the crowd? I find it hard to see the quasi-hipster crowd on Oak eating at a chain.

Has anyone heard a possible opening date for Domenica Pizzeria?

Nik, I'm sorry I like your reviews .. they are always good reads .. but a caesar salad from a chain pizza joint? Come on!

Also could you include in your review a price point please? Last time I ate at Mellow I remember the pizza being $20+ dollars, which I thought was ludicrous considering it wasn't anything special.

As far as their crust goes .. I actually like their take on it. Better than Reginelli's for sure.

I have been to Italy and I don't find Domenica to be Italian traditional at all. Not even close.

And not one single pizza that I've had there would I consider light on toppings.

With that being said...the bacon and mushroom pizza with the egg on it is to die for!

And traditional has different meanings for everyone. Traditional to me is more of a New York style. Traditional to you might be Chicago style.

Have you had it?

I don't ever feel the need to knock a place because it's a chain. I give a fair and honest review regardless. Houston's is a chain and you'd be shocked at the level of standards that go on in that kitchen and the level of things that are homemade vs. Sysco. You'd also be VERY surprised to see the level of Sysco things coming out of non chain kitchens.

To be honest, I didn't pay attention to the price point because was on a date and didn't pay. I need to make note of that in the future so that I can include that in my reviews even when I'm on a date.

I must say, this is a review I never expected.

I like MM's crust more than Reginelli's too. I really don't care for Reginelli's.

The world of pizza is wide and diverse. I don't like a cornicione (the outer edge) that's crunchy enough to drive nails. I want it to have the ethereal combination of crispy-crunchy crust and tender interior, with lots of big holes. I want scorching (leoparding) in spots. I want this:

Meaning?

Just because I eat at places like Emeril's, Gautreau's and Upperline doesn't mean that I'm not open to trying everything. And after hearing from so many people that the shitake mushroom pizza was amazing, it was worth a shot.

As far as the clientele, it was pretty empty. That didn't surprise me though considering it was a Monday and it was Labor Day.

I would agree with that.

That all may very well be true .. not saying it can't be good, just don't know if a caesar salad (especially one from some random pizza joint) is worth writing about on the internet.

Please do .. MM doesn't include prices on their web site .. but I remember their pizzas being quite high.

Probably meaning you couldn't possibly enjoy a chain because you review so many local and unique type places.

Feels like it may be an Ancora night.

I eat at places all the time that I don't review. You generally review places I'm interested in and this isn't one of them.

Nothing personal. Just surprised.

Was this your first time to any Mellow Mushroom?
