Old line by Chevy Chase on SNL- "I don't judge a man by the color of his skin- I judge him by the size of his nostrils".

He had his faults as any human being, but the man stood for something. He wasn't fighting for privileges, he was fighting for equality.

The Sharptons of today are looking for handouts.

MLK disobeyed unfair laws and served time for it. The Sharptons see their arrests as photo ops.

I was 11 when he gave his "I have a dream" speech 50 years ago. He was 34. As I got older I did not agree with a lot of his political views, but his stance on Civil Rights is something with which I agreed.

BHP

I remember being a 10 year old kid in 1961 on Staten Island out shopping with a baby-sitter (who eventually became a nun). There were a bunch of people who were passing out fliers. I only caught a brief glimpse of it as a guy handed a flier to her. I saw a caricature of black person and the "N" word(you can bet there were/are as many, if not more, racists up north).

When I reached for the flier, she crumpled it up and told me not to pay attention to "that crap" (which is as close to a swear word as I ever heard come out of her mouth). She sat me down on a bench and told me that was absolutely wrong to judge others by the color of their skin. She told me that people who make such judgments are sick and that I should pray for them. That has stayed with me to this day, even though I don't usually pray for them.

Correct. He wanted equal rights. He would be appalled by the special rights given to selected groups of people today.

You have to take MLK for who he was. He was a philandering POS, which speaks to a dearth of character. He had some heavy socialistic and even communistic views, which speak to his intelligence. Despite all of that, he had the correct message at a time when most Americans were extremely divided; that all men are created equal and therefore ought be treated equally. His message was true, objectively righteous, and logically sound. The intelligence, strength of character, and compassion he exhibited in his campaign for equality, IMO, were what the nation needed and I think it goes a long way in terms of his character rehabilitation.
