Good Read: "They Came in Chains - The Story of the Slave Ships"

Stepping away from politics and into history for a moment, I just finished this book. It's a quick, easy read. I'll share some excerpts that stood out a bit.

quote:

People of Africa kept slaves themselves (prisoners of war)..Spoke hundreds of languages..well spoken..lived in small communities..wide range of handicraft industries, farming, herding..mostly self-sufficient..cities of considerable size with markets for exchange of goods and a system of taxation..military organizations, capitals, courts..

quote:

An African father is torn away from his wife and child so they can be sold separately.

quote:

The crew of the slave ship stowed the human "merchandise" below deck at sunset. The height of the slave ship decks avg 4 or 5 feet. Slaves were packed in two rows. Only 10-13 inches of surface room was allotted each slave. Packed like spoons and unable to stand, they suffered cruelly on the voyages to America. (ranging from 2-3 weeks of sailing)

quote:

Slave ships had an unmistakable stench that consisted of sea salt, excrement, sweat, and the recently dead.

quote:

In the earliest decades, 1 of every 4 slaves died (25%). Some ships had death rates of 18-52%. Men died at a higher rate than women: 19% to 15%.

quote:

James Madison, 4th President of the United States, "I could make $257 a year on each slave, while spending only $12 a year on his keep."

quote:

...a democracy birthed upon slavery. In 1776 the colonial leaders signed the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed that "all men are created equal"...Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were slave owners themselves.

quote:

The slave population was more than 500,000 in the U.S. in 1776.

Slavery was horrible but black Americans today should be happy their fore fathers were slaves.

No question in every measurable way the families of blacks that came to the US as slaves faired much better than than those that stayed in Africa.

I have pondered a most radical question in my mind recently:

Given the fact that the USA failed to adequately address the slavery issue from the inception of the USA, would History have been better served had the American states remained colonies of Great Britain, until a later time came when Independence AND a decent resolution of the Slavery issue could be realized simultaneously?

If the Slavery issue had been resolved FIRST and then Independence from Great Britain realized, perhaps the US Civil War would never have happened.

Even better...

What if everyone just stayed where they were and not captured and relocated anyone?

What if everyone went into the fields and farmed his own land with his own family members?

What if everything was reversed and Africans subjected Europeans to the same experiences of the European slave trade?

My buddy is from Tanzania (Persian descent). He thinks it funny that blacks in the US believe slavery started with them. He said his ancestors sold the slaves from Africa to Americans.

JFK would have never been president..

No one would be able to do this with the number of people in a family.

What if everything was reversed and Africans subjected Europeans to the same experiences of the European slave trade?

Ignorance is rampant among blacks and whites.

People too lazy to do research so they make up stuff to suit what they want to believe.

Slavery has existed for centuries, but the European form has been documented as the most savage form of slavery.

Don't be like that. The world would be a more compassionate place if everyone got to spend time in the shoes of other groups. Not just blacks and whites, but everyone.

Agree?

No. I believe some races have been alpha throughout the history of time and because of that there's no reasoning with. It's like the have's vs the have not's.

The history of world slavery was detailed in this book on the African-American experience? One thing I am not is lazy.

North and South America would be vacant of humans.

People would only live in NE Africa.

quote:

What if everyone went into the fields and farmed his own land with his own family members?
Where would poor people work?

Btw, almost everyone did that. Only a few people, proportionally, owned slaves.

quote:

What if everything was reversed and Africans subjected Europeans to the same experiences of the European slave trade?
The Moors captured white euros REGULARLY and took them as slaves.

Your what if's are historically what happened. . .minus your first one, which is fricktarded.

I would. I understand black history more than the majority of blacks I know. I literally taught black history to my black roommate last year.

I recommended a book.

What's the problem?

I never said when or how slavery started.

What's interesting is that some appear to be offended. I wonder why.

Poor guy. Ignorance is expensive. He should do his own research.
