I got my first son due in November and I'm putting up a nice shotgun for him. Here's my question. I traded for a excellent condition Rem. 1100 LT20 with full choke barrel and also another Mod. barrel. I was going to let this be the gun I put up for him. Today however I run up on a like new Belgium Auto 5 Light Twenty. The guy is wanting $1000 for his gun or mine and some boot. What do you guys think would be the best gun to put up for Gunner?
Also if its the Auto 5 what would be a fair deal as far as cash added with my gun for the Auto 5? Thnaks for the help guys

Go with the Auto 5.

Its going to shoot forever and will be a beautiful piece once he gets older. The older I get the less I like synthetic.

My dad bought me a Belgium made 20 gauge A5 when I was a young boy. The first gun I feel in love with. I'll have it for the rest of my life.

These guns are known to kick pretty hard. That would delay his shooting of the gun or subject him to some extra punishment which could turn him off from guns...

Out of these two, I think the A5 is a winner

I'd guess $250 on the difference w/o the spare barrel. Maybe $100 for the barrel? - $150 range depending on the condition of each

Thanks guys. The Auto 5 will be for him to use once he's older and knows how to take care of one so I'm not that concerned over the recoil. He's already got a Weatherby youth 20ga. auto to use starting out with

Invest 1000 dollars in a pretty safe stock and buy whatever he wants maybe x2 in 12 years.

Guns can be stolen, lost in a hurricane, or sold under duress.

Get him an NRA Lifetime Membership instead.

When you're dead and gone, that membership card, and magazine subscription delivered to him every year will always remind him of you.

I don't know if you can do this in Alabama, but one of my buddies and his little brother in Florida got lifetime hunting and combo fishing licenses when they were born.

Just looked it up, you can do this in Alabama too. Talk about a sweet gift.

There is a reason that guy wants your 1100 LT20 instead of his A5. I have the 1100 LT20, and its the first gun I ever owned outside if the requisite Daisy Red Ryder

They hardly have any recoil, look great, shoulder and swing naturally. Of my collection, its easily my favorite.

A 22 rifle is the perfect first gun. After two years with that I would consider an easy shooting shotgun. A high quality 22 with good sighting will make a kid feel like a confident marksman.

Actually I brought up trading the LT20 to him. He decided he just wants to sell the Auto 5 instead of taking the 1100 on trade as part of it. I'm stuck at work right now and they have all gun related stuff blocked. Whats a Belgium Light Twenty in like new condition worth with a 26" Mod. barrel? Gun looks like its never been fired, but doesn't come with box or anything. I jewed him down to $900 but he's saying he's firm there. What say the OB?

As for the .22 I'll hand down the same Ithaca lever action saddle gun that was give to me at birth from my dad. The lifetime license may come for his birthday or christmas

ETA: Hard to believe he wasn't interested in the LT20 though. They are awesome guns to say the least

If I didn't have to fund the entire Showmewhatyougotraji franchise I would be all over a $900 a5 20 ga. Don't really know what it's worth on the market, but to me personally it would be worth $900 to have one.

I am going to locate and purchase 2 more 1100 LT20s so each of my sons will have their own. Might get 3 and just mine for me!

$900 is a steal for that gun. Buy it before he changes his mind.

BTW, I watch the A5 market so the above isn't just my opinion.

ETA: I would do unspeakable things to the woman in your avi.

I prefer a child's first gun to be one that must be cocked manually. Preferably a .22 or a .410 cause anything else would kick them pretty good at early ages. My reason for a manual cocking action is that children have a tendency to turn around after a shot is fired and the barrel usually swings around with them. With an automatic, there will be a live round in the chamber. I would say hold off on the auto-loaders until they have some experience proving they operate a firearm safely. Its sometimes tough for children to get the hang of muzzle direction safety. When I bring someone shooting for the first time, I stay right behind them. Cause I've noticed some adults have a tendency to swing that muzzle around too.

Well bad news. He backed out on me unfortunately. He is trying to find me either a 20 or sweet 16 since he reniged on me.

You do realize you can load only 1 shell into that auto effectively making it a single shot right? Plus most auto's will have less recoil than a crack barrel. To me it makes way more sense to buy the auto and use it as a single shot until they are accustomed to how to handle a firearm safely

Too bad on missign the A5 - my Grandfather has several and I always have loved those guns. I domnt have one myself.

I still need to find the perfect heirloom shotgun for my little guy - he just turned 4.

I dont know what I am looking for, jsut that I want it to be a nice wood stock and soemthing he can pass down to kids / grandkids of his own some day.

I have a Mossburg 500 20ga for him to learn with already, but I'm still looking for something special.

Like has been mentioned. A life time Liscense is a great goft for a young child. I got his right before he turned two. The price goes up at 2 yrs old, again at I think 12 and then is full price at 16. Before 2yrs old it was I think $250 for the combo. Full price right now is $700 and it will only go up as time passes.

Great idea.

I bought my firstborn a Henry Golden Boy. I've wanted to shoot it so bad, but he'll be the first to fire it. Purchased it before I knew if he'd ever make it out the hospital.
