quote:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the Washington Redskins nickname is ''unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect.''

Goodell was responding to a letter from 10 members of Congress who want the name changed because it is offensive to many Native Americans.

Goodell cited the nickname's origins and polls that support its popularity. He wrote that he understands the feelings surrounding it are complex and could change, but he also point out fan pride in the team's heritage.

Wilbon just crucified Goodell on PTI for his "gutless" stance on this issue. He said calling them Redskins is like using the N word.

I normally don't. I just stopped on it for a few minutes when I was flipping through the channels. I actually don't mind some of the sportswriters on Around the Horn

You can always count on Wilbon to bring in the race card.

Technically the Redskins name had already done that.

Are any actual Indians upset about this name? Seems like mostly people just trying to get attention and make a fuss over nothing. I really couldn't see myself getting offended if a team wanted to be the white skins or the crackers.
