I'm getting a slight scum line on my boat. I've used Starbrite hull cleaner before and it works, but you have to put a good coat of wax after you use it. I don't mind doing that, but I don't want to have to do it that often. Are there any other products out there that will help clean without being as aggressive as Starbrite?

I take my boat to the car wash every time it touches the water and scrub it down, but in the past 3 weeks, a line is still starting to form. I have a good wax job and everything. What else can I be dooing to prevent stains?

What kind of wax do you use? I switched from star brite to the 3m ultra performance wax and noticed a big difference.

Right now it has a Wax put out by ranger that I'm pretty sure came with the boat. I will be washing and waxing tomorrow. I'll look into the 3M.

+1 on the Magic Erasers for a quick clean. A few years ago we got a white Century and I Magic Erased all 21 feet of that boat . I also use the eraser my kayak for spots that dont wash off with a sponge.

Davis FSR hull cleaner. Works like magic. No scrubbing at all.

Lemon Pledge. Use it on your outboard too. You'll never get water stains/spots.

Maybe this isn't for all but I get this brown water stain on my white hull that nothing will touch, I found some thing that cleans it with out any scrubbing at all. The Works spray cleaner at Dollar stores. $2.00 or less. Spray it and rinse off, brilliant white like new. Saw a guy win that stain and meant to tell him the other day. It's the acid in these EastTexas lakes I'm sure.

The problem with a lot of those products is that they degrade the wax coat (hull cleaner, bar keepers friend, etc). Not sure about the works or magic eraser. You can tell if it takes off the wax by the loss of shine in the gelcoat and if it stops beading water up.

This! The gelcoat become much more resistant to absorbing stains once a good couple of coats of wax are applied.

3M polish will get most stains out with a little elbow grease...just make sure to follow it with some decent wax.

How about that magic eraser? I've read that it will require some polish anyway to even out the coloring. Some have claimed it did some damage to the gel coat...I'm not certain about it either way.

I've put my sailboat in some nasty harbors all over the word and nothing beats a good PTEF wax.

You have to put 3 or 4 coats on at least once a year, probably should use the acid wash stuff right before that.

If you wax it well then when you pull out the boat immediately rinse it off, maybe grab a bucket and scrub the stubborn spots with some dawn right there.

If the brown scum crap dries on then sits in the sun it is hell getting off fiberglass.

But over time, you get a yellow tint to everything. Been there and done that.

Cheapest, thing to use to clear the stain is Muriatic Acid. Under $5 a gallon and will last a life time. It is what boat yards use all the time.

If the boat is on a trailer, make sure it is wet down real good. Use rubber gloves and safetyglasses. Use a clean rag, wet it out with the acid and just wipe it on. Let sit for a few minutes. Rinse off with a lot of water. Then wash boat. The acid will remove all stains and wax. Use 3M wax. 2-3 coats and one is done for the year.

The ingredients in THE WORKS is some type of organic salts it says. Spray it on and rise it off. I wouldn't use it on a new boat but If anyone has an older hull with a tea stain on the bottom that will not come off this is the ticket. $2.00 a bottle.

Where do you get that wax? Might try it after this next time.

Walmart used to sell the good 3M wax, but I don't see them with it anymore. I'm sure West Marine has it. Cost about $8 for a qt.

I use something called Bass Boat Saver that seems to work good.

Academy usually has it. Jamestown distributors also has it and the rough and fine rubbing compounds you can apply before it.

I could be wrong, but I thought the people on the hull truth said it's pointless to apply more than one wax coat because each subsequent cost takes off the previous one.
