Furloughed Federal Employees to get Unemployment???

Holy fricking shite...

quote:

The local union affiliate of International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers has signed an agreement with the Navy which would allow their civilian federal workers to group furlough days in one-week blocks. It's a strategy with one key goal: enable those employees to recoup some of their lost wages through unemployment checks.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a furlough?

Yep. Just pointing out the obvious. The Federal Government needs to be dismantled and restarted from scratch just as it was originally.

Yup... And how can the laws be different for Federal employees and private employees?

As far as I know, you can't clump together gaps in employment to receive unemployment benefits

maybe he's referring to instead of one day off a week for a month, they take one week off at the beginning of the month all together?

I agree though, totally defeats the purpose.

No, sounds like they will take days from different months until it adds up to 5 paid days and then file for a week of unemployment.

We did this at one of our plants for about 6 months trying to avoid layoffs. We kept all employees under 30 hours each week & submitted paperwork to the state weekly. It was a bitch management wise but kept our strong talent from leaving. We eventually pulled the trigger & laid off about 1/4 employees.

I know you can file if you aren't working X number of hours... But these people will still be averaging mid to high 30hr work weeks.

They do not deserve unemployment... frick THEM

I guarantee they are making way more than they should be.

Reading the full article the first one is correct.

Apparently under Pennsylvania law if the employee is furloughed one day per week, his remaining weekly pay will exceed $745 which is the cap (over that, no benefits).

But if the employee is furloughed for five days at a time, then for PA unemployment purposes he has NO income for the week, and thus eligible to draw unemployment. Then, the following week, he draws his normal pay (similar to being laid off and recalled a week later).

They knew they were going to do this when they announced the furloughs. Once again, no real solutions - just a bunch of screaming points.

So how the frick can the employee choose when he's going to work and not work? That makes it even more bull shite.

"No, I'm not going to take 1 day off a month, I'm going to take 5 days off in a row to count for the next 5 months"

The inmates are running the asylum

Idea was likely pushed down by upper management. Like I said, they knew nothing would really happen. Just wanted to pretend they were slashing costs and breaking people's lives.

re: Furloughed Federal Employees to get Unemployment???

don't get me started on the stupidity of the furlough....

the organization i work for does work not only for DOD, but for all sorts of federal, state, local, and foreign governments on a reimbursable basis...AND we do some work for private companies because of some very unique capabilities...

a good part of our employees won't be furloughed because of they are funded with a non-defense appropriation....

then we have a leave system which is pre-paid that is supposed to allow us to take annual leave rather than a furlough when congress gets up to stupidity like this but mother Army and DOD won't let us do that....

I work for the Dept of the Air Force and our furlough paperwork states we CANNOT take the days in one-week periods so that we ARE NOT eligible for unemployment.

See the Navy originally had a plan to cut in other areas to keep from having to furlough their employees, and it worked. HOWEVER, SECDEF said that wasn't fair to every other branch so he vetoed that move. I believe the Navy is once again trying to help their employees...it probably won't work.
