REP in Texas, what's the difference?

As many of you know, in Texas electricity is deregulated allowing the customer to choose their retail energy provider. I haven't had to deal with a REP in a few years as I've been renting and electricity was covered in rent. I am now buying a home and choosing my provider. So I head over to Power To Choose and compare rates. I have no problem getting into a 12mo contract to secure a rate. But my question is other than rate, why should I go with Reach Energy vs Reliant or Centerpoint? I can get 8.5 cents per 1000kw/h for 12 months. Any reason I should be wary of the companies offering the much cheaper rates?

You mean 8.5 cents per 1 kw/hr.
Be sure and check out additional fees over and above the stated cost of electricity.

I live in Texas...had shopped with TXU for years and we opted to go with another vendor and have had no problems whatsoever...TXU wants our business but is not happening as I don't like being fleeced

Yeah, typo. Reach Energy is 8.5 and Amigo is 9.3 which is the cheapest of the companies I had actually heard of. Companies like TXU are over 12 cents.

Don't forget to check the charge for the power line owner. I have to pay a ton to Centerpoint every month on top of my Reliant bill.
Currently have e-Sense Keep Your Cash Nights & Weekends® 12 plan.
Average price 11.9¢ per kWh, based on 2000 kWh, includes the following:
Energy charge per kWh: 8.5¢
Base charge per month: $0.00
Centerpoint Energy Delivery charges passed through without mark-up : $9.54 per month and 3.5766¢ per kwh
The discount is $.01 per kWh and since I am gone from 6:45am-7:00pm I am rarely home during the day.

You need to read the fine print on each one....some for instance charge you a monthly usage fee if you don't use enough kwh. I would suggest looking at your past energy usage to see what plan would be best for you.

I haven't paid an electric bill in over 3 years. Gas and electricity have been included in my rent since then. And before that I had a small one bedroom apartment that didn't use much electricity. I'm moving into a 2100+ sq ft house now though.

No problems with the cheaper providers. I've switched providers every year for the past 4-5 years.
Slight differences in the online account functionalities (current provider I had to call to set up auto-pay) but really absolutely no reason to pay a higher price.
Watch out for any surcharge if you don't use enough energy (if use less than x kw -> charged an extra x dollars)
Bc we don't use much energy, less than 500 kw/month, I always find one w/o the fess

I was looking at Reliant and they charge $6.95 if are under 2000kw/h and $9.95 if you're under 500kw/h.I just want a decent rate for at least a year so I don't have to worry about this crap.

Use this link. It's better than Power to Choose. This one takes in to consideration all fees and extras and gives you the "true cost" per kw/hr.

I use Bounce Energy. They have been pretty good. No issues here. My bill has not reached over $80 since I've had them and it gets hot here in Dallas. I think my minimum is 1000 kwh $6.95 charge. I also referred a few friends and got $75 bill credit for each one.

I may go bounce as I have some friends with them and can hook them up with the referral bonus. Their rates are competitive and I can lock in the rates for 16 months without much of a premium. I won't be moving for a while so I'd like to get my living expenses leveled off.

My advice, go with a short term contract now. Like 6 months. Rates are lower in the winter months. I currently use Reliant. Signed up for 12 month contract in December and my rate was less than 8 cents. I think it was 7.6 or something like that. When Dec. ans Jan come around, look at the rates then and lock in for 12 months.

You actually get a credit on your account for $75 also. So it's beneficial for both you and your friends. You also get a bill credit if you pay 12 months on time or at least that's how it is for my account.

I have amigo but you can choose whomever you want. If this is an existing residence they may have past energy use data to help you decide. There likely will be a smart meter charge to monitor the usage in addition to your bill, and you will have a minimum charge.
