Sun Life Stadium Renovations Canceled

LINK

quote:

The Miami Dolphins likely lost their shot at hosting Super Bowl L when Florida lawmakers opted not to approve a deal that would publicly fund improvements to aging Sun Life Stadium.

Could the consequences be even greater?

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said Sunday on Miami's CBS affiliate that the team will not provide any upgrades to Sun Life Stadium without the help of public funding. The Dolphins have canceled all renovation plans and say stadium improvements cannot be made without public-private partnership. Dee left the door open that the stadium issue could lead to the Dolphins' eventual exit from southern Florida.

I hope more voters/representatives make teams pay for their own stuff.

Call their bluff and see where Miami can realistically go that isn't LA.

Or at least get the city a percentage of profits that tax dollars are helping to generate. I don't understand why it's so popular for tax dollars to be used for private use.

Because its easy money. These teams has figured out they can exploit the voter base because of an individuals affinity for their team. I hope this is the beginning of a changing of the guard. Teams need to either foot the bill or share the profits with those who foot the bill.

Why should public funds be spent on private organizations especially when the public has no interest in fully supporting said private organizations...see new Marlins stadium.

the city would have gotten a ton of money in the form of a Super Bowl and other big time events that they won't get now likely.

Plus it was a hotel tax, so in reality, tthe tax is moreso on tourists, not citizens.

Locals felt betrayed by the Marlins and took it out on the dolphins.

because of the millions upon millions of dollars the city would generate.

I remember reading some articles when Detroit got the Super Bowl that put this in serious doubt. The costs of hosting the event are astronomical. The benefit is intangible that you may convince people on TV, etc. to visit in the future.

Absolutely. The facade of making money from a Super Bowl is grossly over blown. The amount of money that these cities have to now spend just to be in the running is insane. Bottom line, tax dollars shouldn't be used for stadiums and facilities and if they are the city should have full access to them. You want a stadium, fine but I suggest you foot the bill for an operations facility that is close proximity because we may host some events in this thing.

This argument is often used by team owners pushing for public funds for their teams.

The reality is although it is a hotel tax being paid primarily by tourists that money generated from the tax nonetheless consists of tax dollars. And those tax dollars that could be put to use on other projects (parks, transit, schools, police, fire, etc) are instead being spent on a rich owner's team.

It's okay to give a rich man a billion dollars, but I'm gonna bitch up a storm if a black man gets one millionth of that.

I get it.

As someone who lives in Miami, people here love the Dolphins. They hate the Marlins.

And part of the hotel tax is legislated to be spent on sports teams. Would have rather had any public money going to the Dolphins over the Marlins. But Loria fricked it up for them.

Because the Marlins have managed and handled themselves so well...

The only reason the "threat" to leave pisses me off is because this ownership now proves that it cares more about hosting Super Bowls than getting to them. It's an empty threat that's just being used as a scare tactic, but still, it makes it look like they want to pack up and leave just because they can't make money hosting the event, rather than getting the team to the event.
