Multiple porn windows simultaneously streaming. I'm sure this is what Google had in mind when they came up with this idea.

Exactly! Another point to make, people consider Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware to be part of the "South," but they were Union states during the Civil War.

Google Fiber Pole:

LINK

You can pull up to a Fiber Pole (Google Fiber hooked up to a regular utility pole) like a drive through and access Google Fiber when you are out and about and feel the need to access gigabit internet speeds.

From the FAQs:

My pole is always busy - people literally camp out there 24/7. How can I get access to my Fiber Pole?

The behavior you are describing is called Pole Hogging. We’ve heard this can be a problem and we are working on ways to detect Pole Hoggers. Until we perfect our Pole Hogging Detector technology, we ask that users do not stay at the Pole for more than 5 hours when others are waiting. If this is a problem, please call the Fiber Space and ask for a Fiber Chaperone to come to your Pole and explain proper Pole etiquette.

You made the statement that Austin is part of the South because it was in Texas, which simply isn't true. I'm still not sure why this topic bothers you so much.

Austin is the capitol of a state that was part of the confederacy, how is it not part of the south? Because there are only white democrats? Not many blacks?

Austin's surrounding areas are very southern. Texas is in the South. Period.

Wow, there are some fricking lunatics in here.

Texas is a Southern state. Austin is the capital of said state.

Anyone who says that Austin/Texas is not Southern is either full of the Texas butthurt, stupid, or both.

Seriously, I don't think there isn't more admirable company in the world currently than Google. They revolutionized Mapping (you can street view the Mount Everest now for crying out loud!). They will be the first with driver-less car technology. They do so many things amazingly well.

And this year, they're be the first company to offer the public augmented vision. Its going to be huge.

Dallas is a very well known southern city. But I guess since Austin is south of Dallas, that makes Dallas the great white north.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I think it's more along the lines of being self-righteous, because honestly, no one that is able to type on a keyboard can be that dumb.

To me Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. They flew the stars and bars and they are Southern.
But you see, the difference is that Texas has long since moved on, whereas quite a substantial proportion of what people consider "The South" (capitalized) still self-identify as members of said Confederacy first, everything else second. Texans identify themselves as Texans first, everything else second. And as for Austin, yes it has southern influence, but it's culture as a whole it pretty significant different from every other city in The South. Houston is closer, but even that has a lot to do with the huge number of deep south transplants.

everyone else can frick off.

Wow, this is incredibly short sighted.

Take a small business that needs to serve 50 - 100 employees, previous gigabit fiber solutions cost over $350 per month. Google could serve them at 1/5th the cost. Plus, Google will give 1 TB of cloud storage for all the fiber accounts.

Google Fiber is a big deal for these small businesses.

Living here, it definitely has southwestern/western influences - but feels more like the South: live oaks/magnolias, "y'all", etc

Please show me where I can get one of these.

We have 100 meg up and down fiber for $1,000/month at our office.

Heard about a Chattanooga company that is priced around that amount. 350 is definitely not the norm and is probably their lowest price that doesn't account for XYZ, etc. Plus, the cost of running fiber if its not already there. But Chattanooga is a very technologically forward thinking city and might have subsidized some aspects of fiber development.

The simply fact that a person or company can get 1000 Mbit up and down internet speeds for $70 a month is what makes Google Fiber astonishing

if all you're doing is loading websites, sure, gigabit fiber is useless.

but even then, Google Fiber is better than any other internet provider. Just pay the set up fee, and never pay another dime.

So I take it you also consider Philadelphia to be a Southern city since it's a two and a half hour drive from Robert E. Lee's home in Alexandria.

re: Google Fiber could be coming to Austin, TX next

I live in Austin. I can't wait for Google Fiber. I tested it a bit in Kansas and it seems like a solid product, very good for streaming movies, and the TV service is pretty good too.

As for the rest of this thread:
quote:

Wow, there are some fricking lunatics in here.

Texas is a Southern state. Austin is the capital of said state.

Anyone who says that Austin/Texas is not Southern is either full of the Texas butthurt, stupid, or both.

Dallas is a very well known southern city. But I guess since Austin is south of Dallas, that makes Dallas the great white north.

From what I learned from this thread:
Austin is in the South. However, it apparently falls out of being in The South category due to lack of red necks, hill billies, coon asses, country boys, and trailer parks.

With that Criteria:
Huntington Beach, California has just as high a ratio of red necks as any town in Louisiana. Seriously, the place is full of country boys with affliction shirts, 4X4 trucks with confederate bumper stickers and tribal band bicep tats. So, I guess Huntington Beach, California is in The South, even though it isn't in the South?

And I guess Irvine, CA is in Vietnam?
