Neither do I. Single payer might affect pharmaceutical companies if the government wasn't paying them enough for drugs to justify new drug development, or overly relying on old medications.
there's a lot of oversight and inefficiency and, well, glut that comes with R&D and federal administration. I can't see that getting much better, though it would have to.
As for the R&D, a lot of the work on compounds is done in research labs and universities that get federal funding.
And these sites and researchers have said that they don't have the manufacturing capabilities that the private sector has and would rather not take that responsibility on.
There probably would be a hit but the form it would take? I couldn't say. A friend works for GSK's main site here in Canada and they work on some pretty amazing stuff, but I don't know how much of that is subsidized by the Canadian or Ontario system and how much is supported by the UK or other places, more privately.
It would be a bit of a tangle to work out I'd imagine.
But I don't think we'd be entering a medical Dark Ages
