re: "I've Never Had A Bad Meal There"-What Does That Mean?

quote:

"I've never had anything bad there" means that the place is "solid". ...whatever that means. Solid is good apparently.

Solid, Legit, good, bad, all relative terms that mean different things to different people.

A good review IMO is one with specifics as to what makes the meal good, bad, or the food legit or the experience solid. A bad review always leaves you with more questions than answers.

How about "Everything I've had there has been good or very good." Just wondering why it's always in the negative rather than the positive.

Could be because the person saying it isn't quite sure if the place is regularly rejected or accepted and thus doesn't want to go out on a limb and give their true feelings about a place before knowing what the status quo thinks.

Could also be an easy way to defend a restaurant that someone thinks is good or deserves defending but one which said poster really doesn't know much about.

Could also be a way to contribute to a thread without having to add anything of depth.

probably because that phrase is usually posted in response to a negative comments about the place. and people want to respond to that negativity but not appear too supportive, or else get blasted for having shitty taste.

exactly. I could see that being the case more times than not.

Rohan2Reed: "That place is terrible, worst food i've ever had"

I don't recall ever posting this.

quote:

Rohan2Reed: "Maybe you had your taste buds burned off in a McDonald's coffee accident."

Hey, it's possible. Why don't you take a science class or something.

thank you, sir..

quote:

A lot of people seem to talk in absolutes with everything.

i see this as a big part of the problem with restaurant discussions on here. too many end up being, "this place is great, this place is horrible" type debates, when reality is probably somewhere in the middle. people like to talk in extremes but it isn't very productive or, likely, very honset in these restaurant discussions. the jimmy johns thread from yesterday is a prime example...the first page is filled with people say it is terrible and the worst sandwich they've ever had. i hardly believe that is true, or that the place is really all that bad. it just probably isn't all that special..

just having a little fun, dude... at least i used a real quote...

It is rather ambiguous, would they say 'I've never had a great meal there' also?. 'I've enjoyed everything I've had there' is a better endorsement.

"I'd rather lick the ear grease off a pay phone", or "I'd rather chew on aluminum foil" is somewhat less complimentary, but very clear.

I noticed that in the Jimmy John's thread also.

I've eaten there and it is not close to being the worst sandwich I have ever eaten. I also noticed that in the Drago's thread also. Some people saying it sucks when there is a reason Dragos is so popular. I'm sure some of their dishes are mediocre but I doubt they all suck.

At first this used to drive me nuts when I had my restaurant. A lot of people would rave about one of our daily specials then all of a sudden (that same day and same meal) I would get a person calling me up wanting a refund because it sucked when they got it back to their office. It was so bad they couldn't eat it. Same with poboys. I would have people praising me for my poboys one day then I would have a really negative review or complaint that same day on a poboy I fixed the same way that everybody else praised me on.

Food is so subjective to the person reviewing it.

oh, i bet. all the rave reviews would be great but that one "that shite was inedible" review would make me crazy...

it absolutely is. it is always puzzling to see some place you really enjoy getting bashed--what are they seeing that you didn't? but it all comes down to personal preferences.

And well you shouldn't be. The poster knows food, and demonstrates their knowledge of it regularly.

I love vague emoticons.

Perhaps you know more and would like to demonstrate it?

Why do you think that user was chosen on page one? Why do you think you get the feedback you do? Is it really a mystery?

What are you talking about? I'm talking food and food knowledge here and you're bringing up some OT/FDB drama bull shite. Do you have anything of substance you would like to present, or do you actually know anything about food to carry on a conversation with someone on the subject? I seriously doubt you do, but I'll check back during the course of the day to see if you can surprise me.

You know exactly what I'm talking about.

Do you not see that as important?

What subject? Never had a bad meal somewhere? Really?

WTF are you looking for? Look. You obviously know something about food. Would it kill you to present it in a non-douchetacular way? People like me might actually learn something and not get totally turned off by your posts.
