I saw this or "I've never had anything bad there" a number of times just today. In some case, people proceed to then say how much they liked a place.

When I hear or read that, I assume the place is just okay, but that's not the univeral meaning, apparently.

How about "Everything I've had there has been good or very good." Just wondering why it's always in the negative rather than the positive.

I've probably said it myself a few times.

I think it can talk about consistency.. Some people order the same thing every time.. If you order the same thing 100 times and its never been bad then that's consistent.

It probably means they just left a Johnny's Pizza anywhere north of Alexandria

I think it depends upon who actually says it, and what they think constitutes a really good meal from a bad meal.

I've always thought it was a glowing endorsement of a restaurant. Much better than average.

A negative times a negative equals a positive.

To me it means 'Everything on the menu is good, so whatever you order, you should enjoy." maybe not in those exact terms, but you get my drift.

probably because that phrase is usually posted in response to a negative comments about the place. and people want to respond to that negativity but not appear too supportive, or else get blasted for having shitty taste. as in:

Rohan2Reed: "That place is terrible, worst food i've ever had"

Anyone else: "I've Never Had A Bad Meal There"

Rohan2Reed:

rather than:

Rohan2Reed: "That place is terrible, worst food i've ever had"

Anyone else: "best meal i've ever had"

Rohan2Reed: "Maybe you had your taste buds burned off in a McDonald's coffee accident."

Right. Because no one could ever be up to your holy standards.

If someone says they enjoyed a meal at P.F.Changs that must mean that they're an a-hole right?

Plenty surpass my standards, just few to none that you frequent I'm sure.

Not necessarily. If you say it, I take it with a grain of salt, but if someone I do respect on their knowledge of food says it, I take it much more seriously.

"Worst I've ever had" is another commonly used food term.

A lot of people seem to talk in absolutes with everything. It either sucks or it's great. And if they like one place over another they will say x is better than y and its not even close when it actually is close.

To answer the OP's question, i think it's just another cliche expression usually used in defense of negative reviews. At least most of the time.

"I've never had anything bad there" means that the place is "solid".

...whatever that means. Solid is good apparently.
