First, I grabbed a cup of complimentary community coffee only to find it was cold... Well damn, no biggie, I threw it away

Then I wanted to get some shrimp to cook today. I grabbed a bag of frozen louisiana shrimp and was walking away but decided to look at the "fresh shrimp." I see that I can get some good looking shrimp for only $1 more and decide to go with it

Now I admit, I didn't look and maybe I should have, but I assumed these "fresh shrimp" were louisiana or at least gulf shrimp. When I got home I noticed this:

Now like I said, it's on me too for not looking into it but who would have thought Winn-Dixie would have foreign shrimp in the area that I always assumed was reserved for local products?

Foreign raised seafood is a plague.

I've posted here before about my trip to a grocery store up here. I saw a nice bag of frozen catfish and dreamed of succulent fried catfish. The bag had a big American flag on the front and the product name was something along the lines of "American Seafood." As I'm getting ready to check out, I notice the fine print on the back of the package, which read "Product of China."

Yeah you have to pay close attention. I have learned what size shrimp are gulf caught shrimp and which ones are foreign/farm raised at my local Kroger. It sucks because they are usually twice the price, but the FDB has taught me not to trust the foreign seafood, especially foreign farm raised.

At least it was only a $3.75 mistake.

This is what is so frustrating. Mainly because a lot of government regulations that apply to U.S. seafood contribute to that price difference and thereby encourage the importation and consumption of foreign seafood.

That really sucks.

That a pound of Chinese crawfish is $7 and Louisiana in $13.

I still buy Louisiana. I try to stick to Rouses and restaurant depot for fish needs.

I like to keep most of my money in state.

I wish more did the same.

I once listened to a shrimper tell me the importance of buying local while a large center console sat 30ft away behind his business....with two of the new Honda engines clipped on the back.

You're in Baton Rouge and you went to Winn Dixie to buy Louisiana shrimp? I'd have been surprised to see Louisiana shrimp at Winn Dixie no matter where it's located. I don't see them at Albertson's or if they've ever had them, I must have missed them.

What about Tony's or the other seafood joints in BR?

Winn Dixie has such a bad section for groceries it might as well be a CVS.

They didn't have asparagus or brussel sprouts when I went yesterday.

Agreed. Numerous places to buy Louisiana seafood in BR, and I'm a seafood snob raised on the coast.

Being close to campus my choices are Wal-Mart or Winn-Dixie.

It's an easy choice for me because I hate Wal-Mart

If I get my stuff from the huge market in Westwego with all the different booths, does that hopefully guarantee me actual Louisiana seafood?

hey those are made in the USA while evenrude makes theirs in Canada.

Only Mercury are 100% made in the USA. everyone else uses Japanese or Chinese parts.

But again Mercury aren't as reliable.

generally there you are buying from the fisherman's wife or kids. I buy there all the time too.

But only for big events and when I need bulk. It's just too far out the way for me.

Doubtful, but I don't know that much. At most I would say they are assembled in the USA.
