Does anyone know if this class is mandatory or not? And if its not taken, can one still get an internship?

When I went through it a few years ago, if you accepted an internship, the Case Study course was mandatory. The fall class was not mandatory, but you could not get the Internal Audit concentration if you did not complete it.

This is pretty much how it goes I think.
If you accepted an internship, you could probably get away with not taking the Case Studies class, but Sumners would probably be pretty mad about it and might alert your hiring company. Depending on their opinion of the value of the CIA program, they might be mad that you wouldn't be completing the program.
As for the getting the concentration, yes, Sumners would definitely require you to take the case studies course to finish the program and "get the concentration." However, I don't think the "concentration" is officially recognized by the university. To my knowledge, there is nothing marked on my degree, transcript or anything else that denotes the fact that I completed the entire CIA program. I still put it down on my resume and my bio for work/clients, but I dont think there is an official academic program defined by the Registrar's office -- just a designation made up by the CIA program itself and endorsed by the Business College.
Does that make any sense?

You must take the Case Study class to keep your internship. If you do not complete the case study class he makes you inform the organization. Also, you must take the class to be able to put the Internal Auditing on your resume.

From LSU General Catalog:
" Concentration • An alternative track of courses within a major, accounting for at least 30 percent of the major requirements. Establishment of a concentration does not require prior approval by the Board of Regents.
Transcripts list degree titles, majors, minors, and concentrations. Diplomas list only the appropriate degree designations."
I don't have a copy of my transcript to see if this is true or not, though.

There is no major in Internal Auditing. This is why it does not appear on your transcript nor mine.

I happen to have a PDF of my transcript in my gmail and there is no mention of the concentration on my transcript, despite all 4 courses being listed somewhere on the transcript.
I knew it shouldn't be on my diploma. As a matter of fact, I think it might only say "Bachelor of Science" on my diploma and may not even mention "Finance."
But that is an interesting quote from the general catalog... I wonder what it would take from the CIA program and/or business college to get it to show up on students' transcripts.

Yeah, I don't know. It has always been on my resume, and no one has ever questioned it.
Maybe more of if a potential employer calls the university about the concentration, Sumners will confirm you completed all courses.

I don't think that is what he was trying to say. Of course there isn't an IA major. But the comparison would be like majoring in Mass Communications.
Everyone in the Manship School graduates with a BA (presumably - but could be a BS I guess) in Mass Communications. However, everyone has a "concentration" recognized by both the Manship school and the University as a whole. Examples: "Political Communications" and "Public Relations"
So even though there isn't a PR Major, their transcripts would say:
Bachelor of Arts
LSU
College: Manship School of Mass Comm
Major: Mass Comm
Concentration: Public Relations

Do yourself a favor and do not do the program. You'll come out of it thinking you are way more qualified than you actually are. You'll have to worship the ground the head of the program walks on. However, if you do suck up enough, you can get a really good internship, regardless of how terrible of a student or person you are.

Mandatory. Can't do an internship without. The class sucks but thankfully it is just 5 days.

These are probably excellent questions, but why not ask someone in the IA program administration to get the official answer?

Agree that there are many students in CIA who overly suck up to Sumners and those are the students that they automatically give A's to.
I still say CIA is very useful is getting an internship, being able to network, and getting the CIA certification. A lot of companies like seeing LSUCIA on your résumé even if you're not going into an audit field.
And you MUST take Case Studies for an internship/to finish the program. Otherwise Sumners will reject your internship.
Overall, CIA is a great program to do at LSU. However, there's a lot of asskissing and jumping through hoops. Sumners takes it very seriously but don't let him freak you out or intimidate you.

Not a whole lot to understand. All of the tests were basically the multiple choice questions from Gleim, word for word. You just have to be ok with always being wrong on the group assignments, because you will always be corrected after giving your presentation.
I did not think the program was all that difficult and, as many others have said, it's great for networking and getting an internship.

I think you misunderstood me...
I am doubtful that people going into internal auditing really have a clue of what it is in the first place. Typical mindset: It is a job accountants go into out of college. /thought process.

That makes sense. I didn't know much about the program before going into it. I just knew it was a good stepping stone for getting an internship.
