Coffee Shop etiquette

What is the proper etiquette at a coffee shop, if there is one? Should you keep you voice down to a minimum? It isn't a library, but then again it isn't a crowded nightclub either. Any other rules or social norms that should be made known of or enforced? I'm sure there are some laptop "rules" I am possibly forgetting about.

I like that one. I usually stop off at various points throughout the day to enjoy a cup or maybe meet a friend for a cup, but I am not one that sits in there all day. I'll occasionally stop off for 30 minutes or so to read the Post and Courier, but I don't set up shop there.

Yes do keep your voice down, if you can't hear a person two feet away from you go to the ear doctor. A gaggle of people each trying to be heard in the group is very frowned upon.

I was taught that in public, if you speak loud, nobody wants to hear your shite.
If you keep your voice down, low enough only for the person with whom you're speaking to can hear, other people are more interested in what you might have to say.
I guess that isn't really taught anymore.

I think, yes, it is appropriate to keep your voice down. But in this day in age, it's almost impossible to expect a coffee shop to be quiet. People are slamming the microwave doors to heat up their muffins, you've got the loud blender sound going off for someone's coffee granita, etc.

Depends on the shops ambiance. I've been to one in Pike Place Market in Seattle and it's quite loud.

No golden rules, but here are a few to make my experience better.
1. If you are waiting inline ahead of me, you should know what you want to order, and have the appropriate method of payment ready.
2. Do not make small talk with me in line unless I make eye contact. I came here for caffine. I am not very nice until I have consumed such caffine.
3. Turn off the sound on your laptop.
4. If I can hear your music from your headphones, it's too loud.
5. Talking is okay, unless you are alone. Earpieces and handsfree calls are never okay. If you are that important, have someone fetch your coffee for you.
6. Excessive snorting, sneezing, and coughing are never oaky. Please order and enjoy your beverage elsewhere.

Truth.. Starbucks is full of these trolls because they offer free wifi.
If you are in NYC, the Starbucks in Astor Place is the worst. No one seated is drinking coffee. The people that are buying coffee are waiting in line and take their coffee out.

Since I've been to Starbucks every day for the last 10 years I think I can make some observations.
1. Generally, it's quiet. Sometimes the music background is horrible. But usually OK.
2. If there is no crowd, chat with your barrista and learn their names. Aerial and Krista are in love with me and give me free stuff.
3. I don't mind the guy who sits there with his computer for an hour. I do mind the 18 HS kids who do Bible Study for an hour and pull every chair in the place around their table. And they are loud.
4. If you drive a big truck, park in the next door lot. Starbucks lots are very small and you create a problem with entering and exiting.
5. Be sure to go to Starbucks early on Black Friday. That's when rich white women show up to plan shopping strategies. They get their smartphones out and assign shopping centers and items to price. It's like HQ planning before going to war and great fun to overhear.

as a general rule,(restaurants,bars too) I don't really want the whole place to know what i'm talkin about so i'd rather not know what you are talkin about either. I don't hang around long enough anywhere that it has become a problem. This is a "me 1st" world.
