This is my 2011 big board. I’ve improved it over the one I did last year. Two things are for sure: (1) numbers will be tight in 2011 and (2) it is almost comical for me to have a big board this early. Ah, the nature of the beast.

It’s not finished, especially my notes, and I haven’t been able to revise it, but my posting has been sparse lately and will continue to be so for the immediate future. I figure I should contribute it now instead of not at all. So as not to infringe on the work he did, here is Kenyatta’s post about 2011 LA prospects.

I found as much free video to link as I could for those of you that aren’t Scout or Rivals members. Some are highlights, some are game film, some are news clips, some have only a play or two, and some are the highlights of other players that the prospect is also in.

The players are listed by position, offers, and alphabetically (except for where I forgot to hit the sort button).

Wayyyyy too early first impressions, comments, and opinions (and cliches):

NOTES

Bradley Marquez – Marquez does it all: Runs. Catches. Blocks. He can be a home-run threat out of the backfield. Not afraid to lower his pads. Not only does he block well, but it looks like he enjoys doing it. Still trying to find an identity as a back. Needs to get stronger. He has expressed interest in playing football and baseball (shortstop) in college. OU lean.

Daniel Lasco – Has the versatility to play multiple positions. Big back – tall and lanky. Big speed. Big hype. Not sure if it is warranted yet. Will probably end up a wide receiver. Looking to attend college out-of-state.

Donovonn Young –19-5A Second Team All-District despite only starting half the season. The most physically ready for college of the Texas running backs.

Herschel Sims – Small back. Compact. Very smooth runner. Effortlessly makes cuts. Explosive game changer. Good running routes and receiving out of the backfield.

Isiah Crowell – Coach Porter had this kid offered a year ago. He’s that good. Quickly gets to top gear. Great vision and balance. Not easy to take down. Did I mention that he had great vision? Same High School as Jarvis Jones Gabe Wright. Likely to stay in the SEC East or Southern Cal.

Joe Bergeron – His blocking ability, size, and overall strength makes him an excellent fullback prospect, but one that can be a threat out of the backfield.

Malcom Brown– If Aaron Green is the top speedster in the state of Texas and Marquez is the top all purpose back, then Brown is the top between the tackles power back. Once blocks are set, quickly gets through his lane. Has low center-of-gravity and lower body strength that makes him hard to tackle. Couldn’t find anything negative about his game.

Tevin Williams – Listed on the ESPN Rise Sophomore All American Team. Can stutter step, spin move, stiff arm or just flat out change directions to avoid defenders. Good balance and vision. Knows how to protect the ball. . A receiving threat. Potentially a receiver in college.

C.J. Uzomah – He’s what comes to mind when you think athlete. Good size and feet.

Clifton Richardson – I want him at LSU. Doesn’t have elite speed, but he’s an ankle breaker. Makes great cuts. Elusive. Hard to tackle. Not sure what the level of competition his opponents are.

Kameel Jackson – Gets great separation. Good body control. Cuts well and catches everything thrown in his direction. Tall and thin. Needs to get stronger.

Mark Roberts – Uses his long arms to catch the ball at the high point. Not afraid of contact over the middle. First step needs improvement. Plays in a run heavy offense which requires him to block most of the time.

Renaldo Thomas – Also a safety, quarterback, and baseball (pitcher) prospect. Conflicting reports on how good of a baseball prospect. No information on his ability as a quarterback. Safety or tight end might be the answer.

Greg Robinson – Plays both sides of the ball. Body type makes his future the brightest on the offensive line. Even with his potential, he had trouble getting on the field last year.

Marcus Hutchins – Plays on the same line opposite Evan Washington. Prototypical offensive tackle. Extremely athletic – and raw – for a big guy. Great feet. Effortlessly imposes his will. Surprising at how fast he can move. Should be one of the top tackles in the country.

Nathan Gutekunst – Originally from Louisiana. Keeps a wide base. When watching him play, can’t help but think that his technique is just a little unique.

Jonathon Battle – Disruption. Disruption. Disruption. He belongs on the defensive line at LSU. Great strength. Uses his hands well. Good initial burst. Keeps pad level low. In the backfield almost every play.

Beau Fitte – The top junior linebacker prospect in the state heading into the season.

Kendall Thompson – Could grow into a defensive end. Played a lot of end during sophomore year. LSU lean.

Anthony Wallace – Could grow into a defensive end. For film, check out the videos of teammates Corey Nelson and Domonique Patterson.

James Vaughters – BEAST, this guy is one.

Jeremy Griffin – A guy the LSU staff has taken an early look at. Speculated that his best football ahead may be as an H-back.

Chet Moss – Good technique. Sheds blocks well. Average in coverage despite having good speed. Playmaker. Good middle linebacker prospect.

P.L. Lindley – Turning heads at every 7-on-7 tournament stop. Plays well in the open field and in coverage. Good footwork. Needs to get stronger to help shed blocks. His aggressiveness will only grow as he gains more confidence. Could grow into a defensive end.

Trey Brown - Listed on the ESPN Rise Sophomore All American Team. Physical. If he gets a mean streak, watch out. Great range and speed for a linebacker.

Wayne Lyons – Has a nose for the ball. Aggressive. Excellent range and closing speed. Freakish ability shoot the gaps untouched. Good footwork and technique. Takes excellent pursuit angles. Undersized for a linebacker. Might need to be moved to safety although he has the speed and hips at his current size to play corner. Takes the term student-athlete seriously. Excellent prospect. LSU has an in with him, but his ties to Miami and Florida are a little stronger.

Effram Reed – Shifty scat-back that plays with quick feet and a short stride. Not afraid to get physical.

Harmon Brown – Elite speed. Great recovery speed allows him to make plays on his mistakes however few they may be. Lock down cover corner. Good ball skills and body control. Makes cutting and changing direction look easy. Got turned around in man coverage and he still made a play. Plays physical and cocky. Plays bigger than his size. Long arms. Playing press against larger receivers may be a problem.

J.J. Gaines – Looks like a good field general. Great poise. Good speed and athleticism, but he’s not quite as explosive as I thought he would be. Good prospect.

Jabari Prewitt – Head-hunter. Plays with a mean streak. Enforcer. Has safety speed and a great at closing. Good tackler. Needs a growth spurt. Also an accomplished swimmer.

Jaylon Finner - Ball hawk. A true centerfielder. Covers a lot of ground in a little amount of time. Good at breaking down the play and reading the quarterback.

JeVante Watson – Has Rueben Randle’s endorsement as the next big recruit out of North Louisiana. Supposedly playing quarterback for Bastrop this year. Some people feel that his best football ahead is on the defensive side of the ball.

Leroy Scott – Projected as the top defensive back in Texas. Much more physically mature than his peers. Very fluid hips and backpedal. Plays aggressive and cocky. Plays well against the run. Can lay the big hit. Well coached and his technique shows it. LSU was tied with Texas, if not ahead. Been to Texas multiple times since signing day 2009. It’s safe to assume they now lead.

Michael Mudoh – Natural corner. Excellent hips and backpedal. Ran a 4.17 shuttle. Thick body a on a short frame. Tons of upside if he can put it all together.

Miketavious Jones – Supposedly, it’s starting to click for him and his development is in hyper-drive this summer.

Nick Shepard – 1st Team All District as a sophomore. Plays safety but size and athleticism may make him a better corner prospect. Plays the run well. Physical. Great range. Good ball skills. Scary potential.

Quincy Aldridge - At 6'2", he's one of the taller cornerback prospects and he’s not done growing. Great speed and ball skills. Is he a lock down corner, ball hawking hard hitting safety or a catch everything wide receiver? All of the above. May grow into a safety or even a linebacker.

Sheroid Evans – Football and track prospect. Wants to play both in college. Plays safety but body type currently is more suited to playing corner. Tall and lanky. Raw as a prospect. Speed, athleticism and competitive steak gives him huge upside. He has the No. 3 time in the state (Texas) in the 200-meter dash (21.71 seconds) and the seventh-best time in the 400-meter dash (48.56 seconds).

If anything, go watch the highlights of these guys:
1. James Vaughters
2. Jonathon Battle
3. Marcus Hutchins
4. Wayne Lyons
5. Clifton Richardson

Well done, Hand. Consider me impressed--I don't even know half the guys on your list yet (I'm sure it will only be a matter of time)

Herschel Sims is perhaps the best name ever for a running back. Herschell Walker and Billy Sims are two of the best running backs in NCAA history. The only better name I could think of is maybe Bo Sanders.

Georgia is quite the talented state next year and UGA coaches have been recruiting these kids for over a year. I believe they really like Vaughters at DE/TE, though. They will definitely be strong competition for anyone OOS for Crowell, Wright, Vaughters, and Uzomah. Jabriel Washington and Terry Bridgewater are also currently UGA leans, although it is still very early.
