McKenzie's Bakery

Does anybody know what happened to them? The talk of Randazzo's kingcakes got me thinking of back home and the memories of going to McKenzie's with my dad when I was a kid. Never got the story...

re: McKenzie's Bakery
They went out of business about 10 years ago. A lot of people loved their products, I thought it was more nostalgia than quality. They basically failed to modernize, the outlets looked like they belonged in the 50's, it seems when things got tight they didn't rotate stock as much.

My wife loved those little white pecan cookies with the dollop of chocolate on them. The last king cake I got from them was so dry it took a gallon of milk to wash down a slice.

Same thing here...just nostalgia. Speaking of which, I used to get those cookies your wife liked ("turtles" I believe they were called) whenever I would go with pops.

You're right, their fastest moving item was called a turtle.

when traveling home from NO, we would stop at 5 or 6 stores just to bring home 3 or 4 packs of fresh Broadway Rolls. 1 to eat and 3 to freeze.

Creole Creamery is doing a McKenzie flavor ice cream month...I would guess some flavors may be buttermilk drop, king cake and turtle.

Some (but not all) of the Tastees in town have bought some of the old McKenzie's recipes. They are still making Cinnamon Rolls, Buttermilk Drops, and some other items (not the petit fours or turtles, unfortunately).

The Tastee on Clearview has Buttermilk Drops. They're not quite as good as they used to be, but they're passable for a fix at the least.

I get a hankering for the cinnamon rolls every time I drive past that Tastee on Clearview. Thank goodness it's not too often I get down that way.

re: McKenzie's Bakery
McKenzie's filed a bankruptcy a few years back and I was at the hearing. After the thing was done, I had a chance to talk to the trustee. I offered him $50 for he Blackout Cake recipe, but he never called me. Tastee bought at least some of the recipes, but I don't think they sell Blackout Cakes.
Rouse's sells a pretty good one, though.

They were a sub-par bakery compared to other NOLA bakeries. Only reason I ever bought anything from them was convenience of location.
