Little bitty 223, louder than a 45-70,30-06,12 gauge.

Took my AR up to my buddy's hunting camp in Lake Providence over the weekend and we shot all of these guns, and several of the guys there had never shot or even heard an AR15 fire. I'm used to it but they were in awe of the percussion and just could not put the gun down. Several of them even went to town to buy some bricks of ammo so they could shoot it some more.

Shorter barrel. And if it has a muzzle brake that makes a huge increase in sound.

It sort of has a muzzle brake. Didn't realize it made it so much louder.

Ported barrels and ported f’n chokes are the dumbest things in a duck blind I know of. They are not allowed in blind w me. If you cant shoot a duck or a goose w/o a $90 ported stupid f’n choke than please spend your next $90 at the skeet range, learn how to shoot.

Shorter barrel.

This.^^ Most of my hunting handguns that are chambered in rifle calibers have barrels varying from 14"-16". You'd be surprised how much the muzzle blast increases going from a 223 Rem in a 22" rifle to a 14" handgun barrel.

I'm not an AR guy, but I think very few have actual ports or muzzle brakes and instead have flash hiders. While a muzzle brake or ports add a lot of muzzle blast, I'm not sure about the flash hiders. Sounds like something for someone to investigate.

I would think it may be slightly quieter with a flash hider. But it's certainly still louder than no muzzle device at all since the exiting gases are thrown to the slides.

I haven't shot many, but I never noticed they were overly loud.
Sure not much recoil...

Itty bitty .223 is a fairly high pressure cartridge, combine that with a shorter barrel (even the 20" barrels are loud though) and some sort of muzzle device and they are pretty sharp on the hearing.

A flash suppressor/hider will still deflect some of the pressures and sound back to the shooter.

That's one reason they are loud.
