Bought a Raleigh Talus 2 (older model, but unused) for $299 at Capital. Saw the same bike on Craigslist used for $300.

craigslist>used bikes by owner>1990's kona/trek/gray fisher

edit: make sure you know your correct frame size. Something too big of too small will not be fun to ride.

Go with used. My FIL owns a bike shop in Houma and people are constantly bringing in crap from Academy, Walmart, etc. They think just because it's a name brand bike, it's a good one but the manufacturers sold out and put crappy components on a decent frame.

Like others have said, something used. Dependable and under $200 do not go together very well.

You absolutely can't buy one "dependable" long term new for $200, going to take a solid $400 and probably $500 for a pretty basic dependable new bike. Tons of bikes on craigslist though.

Dependable for what? Real mountain biking or just riding around town? If you can turn a wrench and can google working on bikes isn't that difficult. You can make even the cheapest of bikes work pretty good with the right knowledge and a little elbow grease.

As asked, what are you using it for? I got a shitty schwin ranger from target for under 200. I only use it during hunting season and around the neighborhood with the kids. I would not trail ride it.
I had an aluminum framed Gary Fisher way back. Lots of singletrack miles around Jacksonville on that bike.

this. You might be in for a sticker shock.

Search garage sales and Craigslist for a used mid quality bike. A mid quality new will cost $500 ish

I'm about to buy a new Specialized Pitch 650b tomorrow for $524. I wouldn't want anything less for trail riding. You need to find something used w/ low mileage. Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, or Giant. If you are tall (6'3" and above), you can go w/ the new 29er tires. If not, get the 650b or 27.5 in tires. The 26's might be had cheaper though.

Thank you all. I'm in Baton Rouge.
My goal is to realistically log 5-10 miles per week and try the occasional trail when hiking/camping.

I'd like to take the bike out west in June...3 week road trip

I had a cheap Trek mountain bike that I bought new for a couple of hundred dollars years ago. Got on the paved trail near my house and rode around White Rock Lake in Dallas for exercise nearly every day for about three years. About a 15 mile ride. My point is that you don't have to have the most expensive bike if you are riding for the exercise and won't be on hard core trails. Only things I ever did to that bike was buy new tires and a new seat. Had a basic tool kit in a bag on it.

Lost it and a road bike I'd bought later when I used the wrong movers. That's another story that's heartbreaking.
