I need something that turns into a real tree. Not a drake elm/crepe myrtle type. A big tree...

Whichever tree you decide on, make sure you find the root system for the tree, i.e. is the root system destructive (like a lot of oaks), is it a narrow root system, etc.

Surprised river birch hasn't been mentioned. I love the looks of them and they seem to grow fairly fast.

Generally speaking, I agree. OTOH, my side yard neighbor had one on our line. if not for that, the afternoon sun would be miserable in our back yard. I am very thankful for that 1 tree. It is very effective, and not the ugliest tree I have ever seen.

I love Drake Elms and that's what I planted in my yard for future sitting under.

Sweet gum. Not that I am recommending it, but they grow quickly.

As long as the OP doesn't live where there are any high winds or threats of tornadoes..Bradfords are fine. Otherwise they are weak structured trees. One decent wind..and they'll lose half of a side of a tree. Very weak limb structure and over burdened by the weight of the leaves.

I hate a Bradford Pear.

I've seen Red Maple listed often...I have one...do they really grow fast? I hope so...My choices in my subdivision were an Oak, Red Maple or Bradford Pear. I chose the Red Maple.

That's what happens when you spray a broad leaf woody plant with grass killer.

24D will knock their dick in the dirt. I cut them out of my deer woods and spray the stumps.

Im going to plant a Golden Rain tree next year. Decent size and fairly fast growing. I agree with whoever said the Vitex too, I have had one for 2 years, next year it should throw some quality shade.

Rain Tree or Red Maple- Both grow quickly and provide shade. The Rain trees are blooming now.

drake elms are supposed to be really good. we just planted a couple this year. will know if the estimates are true soon enough, but they are supposed to grow 10- 15' per year.
