In need of some shade at the house. What's a nice, very fast growing tree that can get me some shade quickly?

Chinese tallow, aka "chicken tree".

LOL, just kidding, they look like hammered horseshite, and they are more of a huge weed than a useful tree.

I'm not sure you can find a good shade tree that looks good and grows quickly.

Red oaks do well.

As for the tallow tree, legend has it that the importer of said tree was hung by angry Texans.

Tallow trees are the worst. And nearly impossible to kill. I sprayed a small one with 41% glyphosphate once and it browned for a week then was thriving again the next week

read up on the vitex tree...in just a couple or 3 years mine went from 24" tall to 12' and probably 12' across...trim it correctly and the hummingbirds love it...

...just an image I grabbed off the net...

Does everybody hate pines? I kind of like em. How bad would a few pines be?

Not a shade tree at all.

Look at a sycamore or poplar

If an Arizona Ash will grow in your area, I'd suggest that. They are lovely shade trees.

FWIW, I had one growing in the yard of my first home in Port Allen so I believe they can do well in this climate.
