quote:

DJ Jorgenson was hunting with his son, Kameron, near the town of Oneida, Wisconsin when the boy shot and wounded the buck. The deer then ran off into private property, where another hunter managed to finish it off.

quote:

The landowner, Randy Heyrman, indicated that Jorgenson’s intial shot only wounded the deer in the leg and said it took an additional two shots to put the animal down. The hunters met at the edge of Heyrman’s property to discuss who would get the buck.

quote:

The Jorgensons and Heyrman decided to settle the matter with an old-fashioned coin toss, which the Jorgensons lost. Before they left, the young hunter took a quick picture with the buck he could not keep. DJ Jorgenson remarked that he believed the decision was fair, but remained disappointed that his son will have only a picture to remember the deer by

I guess I can see where the land owner is the one that actually killed the deer but no way could I claim a deer that an 11 year old shot and tracked.. idk but seems like a dick move

ETA: After further review, the ruling on the coin toss stands, 2nd guy's buck

just seems to me like the guy acted like a dick.. idk

2 years ago I had this exact same situation. Saw the buck chasing a doe and passed on him. He ran on the neighbors property and the neighbor shot 3 times hitting him once in the leg just as the one pictured is. Buck comes back by me and I dropped him. After a short discussion on his shot vs mine I kept the deer.

if that landowner hadn't shot it, then the boy probably wouldn't even have "just a picture of the the deer"

I totally agree but we are talking about an 11 year old kid. I would have given it up in a second.

My dad had a similar situation happen in Williana WMA. Guys shot a big buck (10 pt I believe) in the arse or something.. Came running on my dad about 400 yards down or so. Then my dad finished him off. But he never heard from the hunter lookin for it or anything. It is mounted in my dads house now

I dont know. I think the 11 year old needs to learn when you shoot a deer in the freaking leg you screwed up big time As a father I would not give my son the option in this scenario

I'd have given the kid the deer.

Adult may be a different story. But a kid? Come on.

I agree, if it was my kid I wouldn't want the kid to keep the deer, he did not kill it. It's a good lesson for him to learn.

If I was the property owner though, it would depend on how often I managed to get a deer on my property. If I was hurting for deer, I may keep it.

I would've told the kid I shot it in the leg and his shot was a kill shot. Kid gets deer. Maybe I'm a nice guy though

I had the same thing happen to me last year. I heard a shot right on the property line 10 min later I can hear something crashing though the woods. A young 8 point bleeding from his shoulder comes stumbling in the field. I immediatley finish the deer off. Not five min later a kid maybe 16 comes walking into my food plot without wearing any orange on the same trail the deer used and the same direction I had just shot. I was PISSED first it was a deer we wouldnt shoot and bc this kid came crashing through our property and the food plot. I told him to get the eff off my property and to meet me at my camp after dark to get the deer. I gave the deer to the kid and explained to him and his dad that under no circumstances were they to ever step foot on our property again. I gave him nd his dad my number and told them to call if it ever happens again and we would get the deer for them.

part of me says I would have taken a pic with me the deer and the kid who shot it and let him have it.. there will always be more deer and it's for a kid.. the other part says, back strap and the kid will learn to shoot better and never forget losing out on the deer.. I'd probably give it up

You shouldn't teach kids that shooting bucks in the leg is acceptable and you get a kill out of that. frick that, i wouldn't have let the kid touch my buck.

I cant imagine a father that would let a kid claim a deer he obviously didnt harvest.

Maybe I am just an a-hole, it is possible.
