^^^^^^^That is a fine pistol. To the op get what you want when it comes to caliber as long as its 9mm, 40 or 45.

Is ammo readily available for them?

If so, I'll take it

Posted by Message LouisianaChessie Top a Springfield xdm 40 caliber for home pistol When the .40 came out it was marketed as 45 power with 9mm recoil. I think we all know that's not the case. The fact of the matter is today's quality rounds make the .40 just about obsolete. The expansions differences are null the penetration differences are null. The only differences at this point in the rounds are capacity and recoil which both favor the 9mm. At one point I was .45 to the core. If I had only one shot I would take that .45 still but for every day carry I like the fact that my compact gun holds 13 rounds.

I have never understood this. With the advancement in ammunition wouldn't the .45 and .40 both see the advancements the 9mm had seen?

There is only so much you can do with a case that was designed a lot time ago.

40 started as a high pressure round so they can't really bring it that much higher.

But they really have. The most impressive 45 ACP round I have seen recently is the Hornady Critical Duty. It slings out a 220gr JHP at about 1000fps. That is VERY fast for a 200+gr round.

Just go look at quality ammo ballistics. Essentially nothing matters except size of the projectile because penetration is designed to be the same. Also there is no secondary ballistic channel from a pistol round until you get to some .357 magnum and 10mm rounds

10mm is in a league of its own. But that limits his choices to a Glock 20, a 1911 (Kimber Eclipse or Colt Delta), and a S&W 1006.

Try and shoot a Sig p226. It is very smooth shooting gun and its proven.

I'm a big fan of H&K as well.

Absolutely. But 9mm FMJ had far more room for improvement than .40 and especially .45. All calibers benefit but not to the same degree.

9mm has the advantage of capacity in most handguns. That may tip the balance and make it the best choice. Do I take an XDm9 with 19+1 or an XDm45 with 13+1? That's debatable.

What is NOT debatable is the comparison of A SINGLE SHOT of 9mm vs .45. The .45 is unarguably better; physics demand it.

If your argument is based on ONLY FMJ ammo, yes the 45 beats out the 9mm everyday. But when you bring expanding bullets into the equation the playing field is leveled. Check out this test where the 9mm Speer Gold Dot beats out its 45 counterpart.

OK, maybe it's debatable, but marginally.

ETA:

I'm not in the camp that believes 9mm isn't even good enough to kill pigeons. If I found myself forced to defend myself with a 9 rather than my .45, I'd be OK with it. So long as it's a Springfield of course.

If we're basing it on muzzle energy then it actually isn't debatable and is factually proven.

But then again, they're only comparing Gold Dots in the video. He has plenty of other videos comparing other types of JHPs where the 9mm gets beat almost every time.

Muzzle energy =/= stopping power.
