True stopping power comes from the barrel of a rifle or shotgun, not a pistol.

Amen, you hit the nail on the head bapple.

I have two shotguns and two pistols set up for HD. If I have time, I will choose the shotgun every time.

I have a 9mm and a .45 pistol both at ready. I feel confident with both calibers, but if I have my choice, it will be the .45 every time.

I will say this. I was at the range yesterday slapping steel with both. If a person has ever shot steel targets with both calibers, it is no doubt which round hits harder. It is no contest really. 9mm will knock the targets down...most of the time. Sometimes it takes a double tap, but a .45 slaps it down with authority every time.

So ballistics gel tests might show what a round does in unobstructed flesh, but what it does not show is what happens when a round hits bone.

To answer the OP's question...I feel like an all steel gun is always the better choice over a poly gun if you are talking HD only. This is for the simple reason that there is less felt recoil in most instances.

There is nothing at all wrong with the M&P or any other poly gun, but if your wife is shooting it, she most likely will benefit from the weight of an all metal gun.

The only differences at this point in the rounds are capacity and recoil which both favor the 9mm

I'm in the 9mm camp, but there is SOME difference b/t 9 and 40. 40 is more powerful and creates a bigger wound.
The problem, and the reason current conventional wisdom goes with the 9mm, is that the .40/.45, while more powerful, are still just "hole punchers." None of these calibers will stop a threat with one shot unless you place the shot really well, and if you do place the shot really well, they all will. So it's more important to shoot fast and accurately than it is to have marginally more power in each shot. Most people can shoot 9mm better than they can shoot the other major calibers, so it is now recommended.
If you are Special Forces and can run a 45 like a sewing machine, then shoot a 45.

That must be it. As a regular OT poster, I'm an active member of Delta, Force Recon and MOSAD. All at the same time.

After looking at all of the gun manufacturers latest and greatest this weekend at the NRA Convention, my next gun is either the FNX45 in FDE or the Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911 in 10mm. I guess that I will have to eventually get both.

The 9mm rounds I have in my gun right now expand to .86 inches. To my knowledge there is only one type of .40 bullet that out does that. You have to be more choosy with 9mm rounds but if you do they can match the .40. Fwiw the state police caries golden saber .40s and my 9mm rounds will outperform those all day long.

Not necessarily.

If we limit the choice of ammo to FMJ only, a larger diameter bullet definitely creates a larger hole.

All pistol rounds are pretty much "hole punchers." With good hollow point ammunition, 9, 40, and 45 will expand well, transfer energy well, and have decent penetration.

If you want a bit more power, magnum calibers, like 357 and 44, start to up the ante in muzzle energy and killing potential.

And if you want to go a step further, a shotgun with 00 Buck or a carbine in 223 or 7.62x39 will all outdo the former.

But as a rule of thumb, with today's powder and bullet technology, 9 = 40 = 45.

Shot placement is always the most important thing.

For this reason I choose 9mm most of the time because I have more chances to mess up with more rounds in the magazine.

This is a great post. The vast majority of people are under the wrong impression about pistols and the rounds they shoot especially with regards to the effectiveness to stopping a human. Dawg23 said in his class the only reason you carry a pistol is because it is unpractical and nearly impossible to carry a rifle or a shotgun all the time. I want to say the the statistic he showed us said that 95 percent of people shot with a handgun that make it to the hospital alive survive their wounds. When you are using a handgun in self defense you are trying to stop a threat. Legal issues aside if I ever had to shoot somebody I would rather them not die. The chances of a different caliber making the difference between you effectively stopping someone and not effectively stopping someone are for all sake of arguing 0. Give yourself more opportunities to hit your target. Missing a target is an enormous possibility when defending yourself.

went to academy today, held the S&W M&P 9mm... feels a lot better than what it'd appear from the picture. Held the Springfield XDM as well. Tough decision. Also had a walther that was in the 459... had a good feel on the grip wasn't too crazy about the bulky barrel design.
