Looking for a good reliable 10 wt reel, any suggestions for something under $300?
Mainly large reds and jacks, maybe an occasional tarpon trip.

I've found the;

Ross Momentum LT #6 on sale for $285

Lamson litespeed 4 IV for $260

Orvis Hydros sl for $256

Any info on this would be appreciated.

If you can get the Ross for that price, it's a no brainer.

The Orvis is ok but it's Chinese. The Lamson is cast aluminum.

Edit- Someone had a Billy Pate Tarpon direct drive for sale on Microskiff a while back. I'd try to buy that first, then the ross.

Only the lower end Lamson's are cast. The litespeed is Machined aluminum and an excellent reel IMO. I believe it comes with an lifetime warranty

Orvis Mirage reels are half off with a free spare spool. These reels are Korean reels, machined in good Korea.

I'm a cork drag zealot but these are hands down the best bang for the buck.

Got the new rod wet today on the Davidson river.

You live in the area? Davidson used to be good to fish but way to much pressure now and the guys at Davidson outfitters many find not to easy to deal with.

I'm a Couple hours away in the city

Yeah I don't do Davidson in the peak times of the year. It's fine in the winter though. Didn't see a soul for the first 2 hours I fished

No experience with them so I'll take your word that they're good quality. Products being manufactured in Korea doesn't deter me at all if I know it will perform as expected, last as long as I expect, and the company will back up its warranty.

If I am up that way in the winter go down the road to the East Fork in Rosman. Now that I live in Chapel Hill I spend most of my time fishing at Wilson Creek or on the Toe.

Can you tell me a little more about the Toe and the East fork? No experience with either

The East Fork of the French Broad is easy to get to. Just about every spot to fish it is right off the road. Meaning you can drive, see a hole, park and fish. So really great during the winter. The wider water that goes through town in Rosman(into the middle fork section) has the big browns in it but you will need to wade that part. A lot of it is delayed harvest and they stock heavy through December. The N Fork is nice to during the winter. There is a place called alligator rock(rock over the road) ask anyone in the area, and right near that is a bend in the river great for fishing but summer a lot of swimmers. In the summer the W Fork is nice but you will need to hike in and parts of the water is marked to use live bait but be careful the people in Balsam Grove are not known to be friendly to strangers.

The Toe it depends on N or S. The North Toe is delayed harvest and most of the good spots run through Spruce Pine and easy to get to. The S Toe a little tricky as you need to hike into to the better spots. Great during the summer as I barely see any one on the South.

Good info. Hit the east and north forks today and did ok - got 14 I think to the net. Figured I'd do better in a DH area with the warm weather. Water was low and very clear though

Anyone tying flies this winter? Should we arrange a TD fly swapping?

I did not get to stop in Northern Georgia to fly fish due to the weather. I did however get to bass fish Lake Tarpon. I'd never fished for bass in Florida, so that was fun. Also, this scared the crap out of me when I caught it.

No way I'd eat an octopus. I thought it was a jellyfish, scared the crap out of me.

Of all the fish pics I expected in this thread an octopus wasn't one of them.

Nice day's catch and I found during the winter that the egg pattern nymphs work great especially the pink when dragging along the bottom of the east fork.
