Just scored a brand new BVK 8wt 9' for $150.
Still don't have a reel for it but will probably go back with Allen unless I can find a good deal on a Nautilus CCF-X2

Worth it, try microskiff dot com classifieds. Every now and then one comes along a few $$$ off.
Congrats on the BVK deal.

Go on... where did you score that?

Also, for the spotted sea trout and redfish guys , list me your top 5 flies and their colors
Need to order some other trying material and I want to start tying saltwater flies to use this spring. I'll need time to get them all right

I try to match the hatch when I go. If I'm fishing a grass flat in the Florida panhandle I usually start with something that resembles a pinfish or LY if they're thick in the bay. If I'm fishing back bay in Biloxi I use a fly that resembles a finger mullet, shrimp imitations in mobile bay.
Enrico baitfish is probably the one I fish the most, particularly one with a green back and white belly

Where are you planning to chase reds and trout?
Here's what I always bring with me in LA...there are lots of good fly tying videos on youtube
EP Mullet - purple and black work well on overcast days or murky waters
A basic crab patter is a must, tan with a little pink or orange favorite
White foxy minnow does well
Clouser Minnow in chartreuse is the most reliable
Some type of shrimp pattern is always good to have
Buck tail in pink, natural, and green, I like artic fox fur for shrimp patterns, various colors in EP fibers

CCF-X2 is a great reel. Have you checked out the X series. Probably less $ than CCF and lightweight/strong.
FWIW I currently have an Allen (Kraken XLA) and I like it. The Atlas looks like a good reel too but haven't seen one in person yet.
Orvis Hydros SL is a great reel for the money too.

Microskiff. Still has the plastic on it. Guy said he caster it a couple times in his yard and never used it again. I'll check out the Nautilus X series. I'd prefer to buy used so I can get a little more for my money.
Eta: might go with orvis as well. Heard good things from friends

Will be on Carolinas coasts from charleston to the outer banks.
Thanks for the pics - I think I can handle these. Guess I need to buy some saltwater hooks.

Bad experience? Which reel where you using?
Posted on 1/23/17 at 2:43 pm to Saskwatch
The only bad experience I've ever had with an Orvis reel was with a CFO III 4wt. Drag went out and they charged me to fix it at less than a year old. No problems since.
Two of my close fishing friends have gone through multiple Orvis reels in salt though. I'm sure there are plenty of good ones, but I've seen too many go bad to risk it. I'd rather buy something else.

I have a Hydros (matched with a BVK) that I use as a backup and it is an awesome reel. The drag is as smooth as it gets. I haven't had it too long, so we will see how it holds up. But for the price, it is a great reel.

Yeah, like I said, I'm sure there are plenty of good experiences out there. I've just seen enough from those two guys to keep me from buying one.

Opinions from saltwater guys. I'm getting set to start fishing in salt so I'm working on flies. Comfortable now with Clouser minnows and Decievers. Here's 2 examples of some new ones I've just started working on. An EP minnow and a little shrimp

Orvis are great reels. Your friends are right. I have 3.

How are the orvis Clearwater rods?
I just ordered a Kraken 3 and need a rod to pair with it. I'm planning on fishing for mainly reds in sla.
Pretty novice to fly fishing. Been a few times in Tennessee and nc with guides. I'd say I'm an adequate caster.

Question for Bahamas (Bluemoons)
How necessary are wade boots for Bahamas? Im going in two weeks and deciding if I should buy some before I go. I have some Simms Freestones I wear with my waders but these are too big and bulky to take on the plane.

Sick. Make sure to take photos and post them. I'm also going back in May.
Which island are you going to? Have you ever bonefished before? Are you DIY fishing or fishing from a skiff? Those questions really determine whether you need them or not.
As a precursor, I hate wading boots and don't wear them. I fish barefoot, even on somewhat rocky flats. I don't fish over death rock just because it tears everything up and the fish are hard to see anyway. Bonefish are spooky assholes and big boots are just one more thing to make noise and one more thing for them to see when they're close.
That said, my "wading boots" are sand colored Converse high top chucks. If the particular flat or creek I'm fishing is across a bunch of death rock or coral, then I'll wear them until I get to my point of walking onto the flat, then just leave them hanging on a mangrove and get them when I finish fishing. Death rock will tear your arse up though, so be mindful of that. In a hurry to get a first afternoon fish/pretty drunk after the flights on my last trip, I cut my foot pretty bad. It sucked having to deal with that for the rest of the trip. Finding peroxide wasn't easy either.
Another thing is that if you're DIY fishing, especially on an island that sees pressure, you're gonna be wading sand flats several miles a day. It's a lot more comfortable to do that barefoot than it is to do that in boots. If you're fishing on a skiff, you can bring them on the boat, and if the guide wants to get out an wade a rocky area, just put them on.
If you have any other questions about fishing and traveling in the Bahamas in general, let me know. I'll post my email.
