I've used the Fuji SiC guides on my last 3 builds. Wouldn't use anything else. I also step them down. I don't know if they cast any better than same size guides, but I think it looks better. I think the ceramic guides are easier on the line, too.

damn, y'all might talk me into these things. Are the fuji SiC noticeably better than similar guides?

I haven't tried other brands, but I'm sure they are good. I put Fuji ceramic single foot guides on the Sage blank I was building 20+ years ago. It is still one of my favorite rods. I just stayed with the same brand on later rods.

To many variables to really answer this. You can spend as much as you want or as little as you want.

If you used a cheap blank, snake guides and a fuji reel seat it could be done really inexpensively.

I go to where I loved putting a Fuji reel seat on my rods. Extremely light

Is there something I should be doing differently when fishing the minnows with the hook that faces upward? I found myself losing several fish using that minnow (I was bass fishing by the way). Even after having them on for 10 to 15 seconds.

Edit: I am referring to setting the hook by the way.

For some reason that pic isn't working.

Anyone getting out there during the Thanksgiving week? I will definitely be doing some bass fishing but also going to try to get up to Arkansas for one day and do some rainbow and brown fishing.

Last time I went out bass fishing they were digging this fly from Bass Pro. Getting really aggressive with them.

Also if any of you guys know any good flies for catching gar I would appreciate some recommendations. We have a gar problem at our place and we shoot them, but I would like to try and angle some.

Forgot to mention they are alligator gar im pretty sure.

It's called a bend back fly.

I've never used them I don't think.

How come bass will be found near bluegill, but if you put on a bluegill or sunfish fly, the bass may not even bother? Aren't they supposed to feed on these?

Most people that I know who fish for gar, literally, take some nylon braid, tie it on a hook (the hook isn't even necessary), and just tease it out so the gar's teeth get caught in it.

Here's a nice little video that Steve Dally put together of winter streamer fishing on the White River system in Arkansas.

Guys at the fly shop in Dallas love that guy and couldn't recommend a trip with him highly enough.

I've known Dally for a long time, but I hardly ever cross paths with him anymore. We used to fish together quite a bit back 15 or so years ago (before I had kids).

Do you have a local fly shop? They'd probably be willing to tie some stuff up.

If not, I actually do know a guy who will tie up custom stuff for you and ship it out. His name is Matt Hawkins and his email is downstream94@gmail.com

Guys I was looking for some advice on flys and presentation for Specks. I am new to saltwater fly fishing and have found that specks are less sought after by fly fisherman and therefore have found less information on fishing for them. They are pretty much all I target. I was on a top water bite this weekend and tried some poppers but didn't have any luck and didn't stick with it long.
Anybody have any favorites they wouldn't mind sharing with a guy getting his feet wet would be much appreciated...
