Agree, I've always got a few and when nothing is working I can usually at least avoid the skunk with one. I also tie them with a shorter tail and less bulk than the ones I've bought. I can't seem to find a picture but here's my goto recipie:
gold tungsten bead
lt olive tail
peacock ice dub body
grizzly hackle
I usually just go with a size 12, sometimes a 10. trout, crappie, bass, panfish, catfish, something will eat it.

When fishing them for bass and sacs are you just casting out and stripping them in?
I've drifted them for trout in the river, but I still haven't caught shite, I need to book a trip with a guide.

yep, just cast and strip.
in a river you can drift them, strip them, or swing them.

I can post some pics of mine favorite ones if needed.
I'd love to see some pics. Since I'm not gonna be able to fish for a good while I think I'm gonna start learning to tie flies.

My guess is one of both of the following is happening: you aren't detecting the strike and/or you aren't deep enough in the water column.
Reds - ill load up pics soon. Nothing to fancy about my flies and all are easy for the most part. Post up when you're ready to shop for tying stuff - I do not recommend a fly tying kit.

I know nothing about salt water fly fishing but this is, IME, the best all around fly in existence
I 100% agree and Tom Rosenbauer explicitly says this in the Orvis fly fishing guide (great book by the way)

Looking for some advice on flying with my fly fishing gear. I am headed to Boulder to visit my dad and we planned on doing some fishing along Boulder Creek. I want to take my own gear up there for once but I don't know the rules on taking flies, forceps, ect.. through those idiots in security. Thanks for the help!

You can carry your flies in your carryon. I would definitely carry my rod and reel and not check it.

It's iffy with flies. All other gear should be good to go on carry-on but I've heard of many stories about taking flies on and it seems to be up to whomever is checking your bag. Safe bet would be just to check them.
When I get home today I'll get you a pic of a great fly for Boulder Creek. Used to slay them with it when I lived there. I need to upload some other pics of buggers anyway.

I appreciate that, I'll upload some trout pics if I happen to catch any.
Anyone fishing that Rio Cichlid fly fishing tourney in City Park this month?

I tie mine a little differently than most (prefer shorter marabou tail and less bushy body) but every one of my fly boxes has plenty of buggers - salmon, steelies, trout, bass all love them.
I tie mine with a shorter tail, but instead of a chenille and hackle I tie it with spun marabou. I'll trim the spun marabou on the body some but it stays pretty bushy.
i will usually add 10-15 wraps of lead wire for weight or but a bead on it.
I don't have a clue what it's suppose to mimic but trout have a hard time passing them up.
ETA: Trip to the White wasn't a complete bust but they ran 8 units (the bull shoals only has 8) nonstop. The lakes up there are extremely high with all the rain that they have received.
We would drive down to the Norfork and fish until the water was turned on there. The water usually reached us around 12:00 pm
Caught a few but not what I'm used to catching but it was a fun trip regardless.

Great place to get equipment at a huge discount. Most is used, but in really good shape
tradenstuff.com
I'm going fly fishing today. I can't hardly tie flies to my line, and have no idea what to use. Probably get a stocked rainbow, but hoping for a wild, native brown or brookie.

Do any of you have Frogg Togg waders? I have my eye on the Hellbender waders, but am having trouble with sizing. Their size chart doesn't make any sense to me. Does the max chest make a lot of difference? The difference in the inseams is only about a half inch between some sizes. Maybe I am just oblivious to wader sizing but this seems weird. I have my eye on the large, but I typically wear an XL in most sizes of anything. Size 11 to 11 1/2 foot, typically wear a 32 inch inseam pants, and for something like a suit coat I usually wear like a 44R or 44L. Any insight?

I haven't posted in awhile. Mostly just been fishing.
The water in St. Bernard has been pretty filthy. River water combined with huge tide movement makes it tough for all that dirty water to make it back south. So we changed areas and we've been smashing em. The trick has been finding really skinny water close to bigger water. There haven't been a lot of fish far back up in the marsh. We've tagged a whole lot of fish the last couple weeks, and even kept a few for the grill. Couple of pics:

I have Frog Toggs. Great waders. If you need to buy wading boots and waders online, I'd go to a store and try them on first. I actually pay extra, and buy them in a store so you make sure you get the right stuff. So with Frog Toggs, I bought a size larger than I would have guessed form their chart.

Went ahead and ordered the Frogg Toggs and some Korkers wading boots. Checking things off the list for our Arkansas trip in a couple weeks.
