It's only 30 minutes from the city, so it's not "middle of nowhere". All the homesteads I've read about are up north, but we're in Louisiana so we don't have to deal with the extreme cold and other problems I've read about when it comes to homesteading.

I've got a pretty big interest in this stuff. I have friends who basically "homestead" on some of the islands around here.

I am thinking about doing it to a lesser degree. Would like to build and off the grid cabin on out land about 15 min from the house. Instead of a mancave, I'll have a mancabin. Close enough for me to stay at and drive to and from work.

How much land you got?

Any homesteaders out there? We're looking at 10acres. Thinking chickens, raised beds (to begin with), bees, composting (including a composting toilet), rain barrels, alternative energy, etc. Needing advice on beginning and advanced stages, self-sustaining property, whatever you can think of!

Type of house? Biggest concern in the south would be A/C in the summers. I could deal with no A/C during the day, but I NEED that shite at night.

Couple of thoughts:

There is a reason people they live like they do today: running water, sewage, AC, etc. Keep that in mind.

Living like you say will not be 'fun' after a while I would think. You'll be spending your time working to live.

If you want to constantly be stinky and working and aren't worried about bacteria in your water, then go for it man! But I tell you what. I camp, hunt, fish, work on a farm. And I can tell you that a nice hot shower and some ice water is damn nice when it's done.

So what exactly is homesteading?

alternative energy.

That's what I want to learn more about. Even if I do run electricity to my camp, I want to be able to be total energy independent if need be.

The premise of homesteading is to become self sustaining, debt free, leave a small "footprint", waste practically nothing, etc. Farming, raising animals for food (butchering, eggs, and milk), cheap/free energy sources like wood/wind/solar/homemade candles... There are varying degrees really. You can do it anywhere and to any extent depending on what you want.

I'd love to do this but my current job doesn't allow the time. I'm too young to quit my promising career just yet too

Many folks just use honey buckets in their outhouse. The new thing is composting toilets.

Homesteading doesn't mean having to live like Jim Bridger. I know off the grid folks who have most of the comforts of home, just alternative ways to power them. Many have satellite TV.

They do have greenhouses, cistern water systems, chickens, maybe pigs or cattle. Repairing your own implements. Also access to subsistence fishing and hunting helps.

Dropping out doesn't mean living like a bum, necessarily.
