I have had a BGE for 5+ years and I just cannot find a charcoal worth anything in Covington/Mandeville other than the BGE kind.

I have bought every kind I can find from Winn Dixie, Sams, Walmart and Rouses but I cannot find anything other than the BGE version that does not Pebble and make tons of Ash.

What do you use and where do you buy it?

I use a Hasty-Bake grill/smoker. Since they stopped making charcoal due to the new EPA standards, all I ever use is Royal Oak LUMP charcoal. frick a briquette.

BGE is Royal Oak Lump. BGE, Primo, KJ all private label charcoal. I find the bigger chunks burn hotter and longer than the smaller chunks. I like the smaller for smoking and bigger for searing and baking(pizza). I buy whatever the best deal. Academy has good deals on lump and they sell a good selection of woods chips/chunks.

The bigger the pieces, the better the airflow hence burns hotter.

I'm a Bayou Classic distributer so I use theirs and it's pretty consistent. I have only had one bag that had very small pieces and small sticks. It must have been the last bag of the run.

Royal Oak Lump

You can get it at Home Depot in Covington or Rouses (West Approach) in Mandeville.

Picked up a 34 pound bag of Cowboy brand at Costco today for 18.99. Cowboy brand is what they gave me when I purchased the egg. I did pick up vision brand from SAMs last time I was there and it worked fine. I just pick up whatever is a good deal

I mainky use royal oak.

But, when I can find the coconut charcoal briquettes, I buy a bunch. They burn very clean and are nearky neutral in flavor.

My newest fuel has been willow.

I make a small willow fire in my pit before doing anything. If I light it an hour early, I end up with an awesome pit. Fragrant and yet somehow very clean burning.

I've been using that cheaper cowboy charcoal, not for the price but the availability. Only issue is the inconsistency in charcoal size, but I've never found it to mess hinder the cooking.
