You can tell by the skin color. By the end of summer, Alx is the color of the snake, or darker. I can still pass for white.

Nope still available and FDA approved. I have nevery seen one either. Really neat find. Small mouth and rear fangs is correct. They also do not hinge open their mouths all the way like common vipers. same reason Cobra charmers can work without fear.

Cool. I've come across only one, and I was about 10, (pre-snake annhilator days) and didn't know if it was a coral or not. So I retreated.

believe me, when i almost stepped on it, i started to reach down, then that rhyme went thru my brain. Then i looked for a stick to pin it down.

Black on yellow, kill a fellow
Red on Black, good for Jack.

Saw one at our deer camp in TX. Neighbors wife was bitten by one. They rushed her to the hospital in Seguin and she was able to get anti-venom. When they gave her the anti-venom she had a heart attack. She eventually recovered at a hospital in San Antonio. Neighbor said the total medical bill was > $100k. I guess his insurance covered most of it. That venom is very potent.

Another coral snake story.

I was queued up in a doctor's office exam room with the door open. Noticed a guy I knew queued up in the chairs out in the hallway and started talking with him. He tells me he has been bitten by a coral snake and he's got it in a jar. Yup, it was a coral snake in the jar. The doctor comes in the exam room and closes the door. I tell the doctor I can wait and he needs to attend to a snake bite victim. I told the doctor I could definitely ID the snake as a coral. If I remember correctly the young man and the snake were life flighted to Pensacola.

Not true. They are an elapide, meaning they don't have retractable fangs, just fixed. They are small fangs, but not rear fanged like a boomslang.

I always thought/read they had fangs in the rear of their mouths. When googling, the eastern coral has fangs in the front. When googling coral snakes in general (many species of coral snakes), some say they are rear fanged. Now I'm confused.

And just to be crystal clear, since nobody has stated, they strike, just like other snakes. That "need to chew on loose skin" myth is what apparently gets some people bitten who feel like they are safe from being struck.

For those that travel outside of the US, red and black/red and yellow doesn't work in some countries. Just don't touch any of them.

I've never seen one strike (not saying they don't), but have seen two small ones chew on a stick that was waved in their faces.

That's hilarious! Talk about a white knuckle grip, he's going to pinch that snakes head right off!

She said he raised up and bit her leg above the ankle. She said she saw him on the porch and she was trying to shoo him out. She said she is lucky to be alive.

I kinda chuckled at that too, but if you've handled one before, you know what incredible contortionists they are with their mouths.
