Can anyone tell me what this is? It's about 12-18 inches long in BTR.

DeKay’s.

For future reference, particularly for anyone mistaking this for a copperhead… a distinctive feature of the copperhead that aids in identification is…well…a copper head.

On a related note, got my first catch of the year today. 2 trips on my creek but no cottons yet, but on the trail back to my house I caught a feisty black racer. He was all dusty so must have just come out of brumation from his winter burrow.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have ribbon snakes in my yard pretty frequently and my dog likes to "play" with them. I caught my dog playing with this little fella and I didn't recognize what it was so I was a little concerned for my dog.

With the head and eyes, you can usually tell if they are dangerous. Of course there are exceptions but if it has a small head and round eyes, it's going to be harmless. If it has a larger triangle head and slit eyes, it's dangerous.

That's what my old grandma (RIP) would call just about every snake. Garter snakes and speckled kings she knew were not "ground rattlers" but everything else was.

Then I'd go to my dad...and he'd properly identify it.

DeKay's brown. I had one that hung around my garden. This spring when I started working on my beds, I found him mummified and stuck in some garden netting. I miss him.
