I don't want to spoil your interest, you don't need negative nancies ruining it. I was up there for a few rough winters. I have heard they haven't been that bad up there recently, but I don't really keep track. The first 2 years were pretty great as everything was new and shiny. The routine wore on me after awhile though and the outdoors lost some of their appeal as I can do a lot of it back closer to family.

It is definitely worth going up there, would do it again if I had never been there.

For some, yes. For others, no. If it's home, you never tire of the scenery. Some people just aren't a good fit.

It's as beautiful now as it was 20 years ago. Maybe moreso, as I've explored so many places I didn't know existed.

Even if it is home, you have to go on with life. It's a background feature that you experience in free time. Not saying it gets ugly, it just isn't as much of a focal point as when it is new as life takes over. That's when you have to deal with if the place is a good fit or not.

For most people, the quality of life and satisfaction with their lifestyle is one of the highest in the nation. It's not for everyone. Some aren't that into nature and the outdoors. I could see those people being dissatisfied

Three places on the road system I would not live, anchorage, eagle river or Fairbanks.

Yep. I think if you move to a wilderness area for work and are a career guy, scenery may not count for much. That ain't me. I'm here for the experience and it never gets old.

Lol, no

It's middle of the road and has one of the nations highest suicide rates. You are just wanting to look through rose colored glasses about it. I am a big outdoors person, you can experience a lot of what Alaska has to offer further south.

I never get enough of the mountain views I have in the NW and it doesn't compare to AK. I was in Anchorage last October but unfortunately the weather wasn't great but we still got a lot of great views.

Damn you Roger for being a positive person and enjoying what AK has to offer and not succumb to the dreary extended winter and offing yourself.

LINK

There are people who definitely don't belong here and for that I'm glad.

I don't mind the weather, prefer snow to rain. I like the gray, misty, moody days and the sunny days all the same.

Sept-October are the worst weather months. Lots of storms moving up the Gulf.

So Palmer, Wasila, or bust?

I'm probably going to start out renting I'm Anchorage. I'be heard to stay out of the areas that end in view. Any other places I should stick close to?

You may like Anchorage. It's a mid sized city, has a lot of things for a city it's size, but the traffic sucks, and there are just too many people there for me.

Eagle River is a suburb, pretty area but it's littered with short term residents who are here for work.

If you don't mind living in the city, Anchorage may be your kind of place. The Valley is more to my liking though it's getting overcrowded now as well. I think y'alls offices are off of Tudor, which turns into Muldoon. Stay away from Muldoon. It's a terrible area.

I just like Palmer. Very scenic, and a better community IMO than Wasilla or Eagle River. It's also less expensive than Anchorage.

That's happiness and the study leaves out the high rate of suicide stated in the article. You can get a completely different list if you search for quality of life as you said in your post.

The village is a tough place to live. Don't wish it on anyone.

Villages can be rough as frick, they can give New Orleans a run for their money with crime.

The cool thing about being a NOLA resident for a period of time is it prepares you for most anything.

And no, it isn't but I'll say I had a couple interesting situations last October with drunks at 7 am.

I never felt like I had to watch my back like I do in NOLA. Eta...my post is not about the villages. I have zero experience there.
