Roger!

I've asked you this before, but I will be moving to Alaska sometime in April/May.

Got a job with USFW Bureau of Subsistence Management!

As somebody who grew up in southern Louisiana, can you give me recs on the neighborhoods around Anchorage, Wasilla, and Palmer?

Not looking to buy right off the bat, going to rent, settle in then hopefully find a place to own.

Also easiest way to travel/move to Anchorage? Feds are going to pay for most of it, so I am thinking about driving. I have a dog and a cat I have to move as well.

Going to get rid of most of my shite, outside of a few things.

What would you recommend for clothing, etc.

Thanks!

Drive if you can.

Honestly, if you don't mind the commute move to Palmer. It's absolutely gorgeous, has some great people there and housing is a lot less expensive than Anchorage or Eagle River. Eagle River/Chugiak is nice, but pretty expensive.

Palmer is about 8 miles from Wasilla but a world apart. Has a lot of recreational activity, two glacial rivers running through it and surrounded on 3 sides by 6,000' peaks.

Go have an Alaskan Amber at Klondike Mikes for me

You're in for an adventure.

As for clothing, just get what you need when you get here. You'll find a lot of folks wear Carhartts and dress is very casual, even in professional circles. Anchorage is full of good outdoor clothing stores.

That's what I'm hoping to do...got to talk to HR and see if they will allow it.

I'm going to be moving with the bare minimum (TV, handmade pallet table, guns, wildlife painting, etc,)

I'm definitely looking at Palmer or Wasilla for permanent dwellings.

Is it more or less expensive for clothing in the CONUS? or is the price relatively the same?

Relatively the same. Housing is expensive in Anchorage, but everything else is similar to the lower 48.

that's what it looks like as far as my initial research.

As far as Anchorage, are there areas I should stay away from? What about areas I should be looking into?

ETA: Seems like from my research to stay away from areas with -view in the name.

Palmer is awesome. If you want privacy, look for a place on Fishhook Rd. It's on a bluff above town, just at the base of the Talkeetna Mountains. Loved it there.

Another option if you have time might be to drive to Bellingham Wa, and take the ferry up the inside passage. You can stop and get off in the towns along the way (including Juneau) then continue on the next ferry north. At Haines, connect on the Haines Hwy to Haines Junction YT to the Alaska Hwy

If you drive, be sure to get a copy of the Milepost. Stop at Liard Hot Springs on the BC/Yukon border. It's pretty damn awesome.

The Ferry is very cool. Stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg and Juneau, terminates in Haines.

Avoid the areas near the base. Mountain View, Russian Jack Springs. 4th Avenue at night is a bit rough.

Everything else is fine.

If you plan on driving make sure you familiarize yourself with the Canadian laws regarding firearms. I'm not sure what the current regulations are, but in 2002 you could take a cased rifle or shotgun, but handguns were a problem. Certain types of mace or pepper spray were also illegal to cross the Canadian border with.

I took Alaska Marine Highway ferries between Haines, Skagway, Juneau and Sitka. Also Homer to Kodiak and back. Sometimes with my vehicle, sometimes not. Very enjoyable! Meet some interesting people and enjoyed some fantastic scenery.

I love the ferries. Always see people I know, the crew will let you know if they see whales or wildlife.

Some vids of the S.E portion from Bellingham to Skagway

Can vouch for that. Spent 2 months in SE Alaska riding the ferry, hitchhiking, and staying in hostels as a kid. Awesome time.

Roger....do they still have covered areas with heaters?

I remember all the backpackers setup their tents under there or just slept on a cot in their bags.

Yep, under the solarium. Lots of folks pitch a tent on the upper deck under the solarium.

Nice....if I could I'd love to go back with my home on my back for a period of time.

Recently saw our pics from our trip in 1989. Good times.

You're not far away. Wouldn't take much for a trip. The sad part, no matter what, it will never be as great as that first trip. I've driven the Ak Highway several times, and it will never be like the first.

Hope the OP makes an adventure out of it. Many folks are in such a hurry they don't enjoy the journey. Hope he takes his time and makes some memories.
