You're not far away. Wouldn't take much for a trip.

The way I'd like to do it wouldn't be easy. I'll have to settle for a couple weeks one day.

Agreed, you never know when it'll be over.

Definitely plan on taking my time. Going to bring my father on the trip. He's never been to any of the state's in the Midwest.

Do the Ferry if you can. You'll get to drive to NW Washington, through part of the Yukon and Eastern Alaska. Ferry is about 4 days if you don't get off and visit towns along the way. But I'd recommend at least visiting Juneau. They have cabins if you're needing one.

What's the shortest amount of time you would recommend for a trip? Alaska seem overwhelmingly big and I don't want to rush through anything in an effort to "see it all" (which I realize is nearly impossible in a lifetime, much less a short vacation)

Alaska is kind of like California, only much much larger. It has different geographic regions which are very very different, as are the towns and the people that inhabit them. Anchorage is kind of like a mid size city anywhere, except a more frontiers feeling, mountains and relative nearness to wilderness.

Most of the State is off the road system, which limits most people to driving, or ferry. I'd spend a week or more alone in Southeast Alaska, a week on the Kenai/Prince William Sound, 2-3 days in Anchorage, and a couple of weeks in the interior (Denali, Wrangell St-Elias, Fairbanks)

Southeast Alaska is roughly the size of Florida, with only 70k residents half of whom live in the Juneau area. It has more coastline than BC or California, over a thousand islands, the densest bear population in the world, a couple of national parks, national monuments and a lot of wilderness.

3-4 weeks you could touch on much of the State that's connected to road or ferry systems. Any shorter time, just pick one area and focus on it.

alright Roger, hypothetical question.

Do you think you could make it from Baton Rouge to Bellingham, Washington in a 2000 model 4runner with 250,000 miles on it

ETA: You also know anything about Bethel,AK apparently I will be out there for a few months when I start my job

Don't see why not. I pulled a trailer behind an Isuzu Rodeo all the way from Louisiana to Haines, AK.

Oh shite. It's literally the worst large town/small city in Alaska. It's a depressing place, a native hub on the Kuskokwim River and they do not like white people.

I'd move to Idaho before I'd live in Bethel long term. I could probably survive two months. It's the worst place to get your introduction to Alaska.

yeah I know I will not be staying there permanently, but there is a USFW outpost out there, and apparently the guy who I need to train under lives out there

ETA: I would travel out that way frequently, but live in Anchorage

ETA: Oh jeez, yeah that place is crazy...see people call it Beth-Hell...I wonder how they people over there at the USFW post deal with it all

It's flat tundra, 65% native and expensive. It might be fun for a week or so, but I couldn't live there permanently. Just pray you don't get a transfer out there. I imagine though you wouldn't be stuck in town all the time though.

Hell, you might like it. I know people that live there and love it so you never know. I talked to a guy who was in charge of the Visitors Bureau there once, a guy from Alabama and he was in culture shock....

You'll get a quick introduction into native culture, particularly Yup'ik culture. They're living in two worlds, it's kind of fascinating if you can deal with the bullshite.

The town recently repealed some liquor prohibitions, so you'll have that going for you. The natives can't handle booze at all.

pretty sure this is one of the reasons my supervisor is sending me there. Working in the Bureau of Subsistence Management, I will be dealing with the tribes quite often.

Ah, that makes sense. Bethel is a regional hub for all the Y-K Delta villages. Subsistence rights are a hot issue with the natives.

To earn their respect, be sure to eat fermented beaver tail or seal flipper. Or stink heads. They consider it a slight if you turn them down. Always respect the elders, they're the key to gaining acceptance with the rest of them. Overall they are good people, particularly the elders. They have some amazing stories to tell.

I still want to move up there but Mrs Demon doesn't want to leave her family here. When I saw the title I thought somebody bumped my old thread

If you drive look into the firearms laws as someone mentioned. Long guns generally not an issue but pistols pose a bit of a challenge. There are forms see LINK

Eagle River is nice, that's where I lived when I was up there. It is kinda like Anchorage's Mandeville. Get ready for a culture shock lol. Some end up like Roger and some end up like me and never want to see that hellhole again. The scenery no matter how pretty it looks fades to background eventually.

Certain kinds of mace/pepper spray used to be not allowed into Canada. I don't remember all the particulars, but they tried to confiscate my bear spray because there wasnt a picture of a bear on the canister! That stuff was $40 or $50, so after I begged for a while, they eventually let me keep it.

I found the form I need to fill out in triplicate and pay 25 dollars for! Was on the state fish and game site!
