Invaluable information. The ferry live at 6pm on April 29th and the itinerary says its a 65 hour trip so in order to be able to cross the border I might have to stay the night in Haines.
Probably best. It's an awesome little town, love it there. It also puts you in a good position to get to Tok the next day.

Honestly, if you don't mind the commute move to Palmer. It's absolutely gorgeous
you have that right...looking at houses now in Palmer after getting a realtor to send me houses in Anchorage/Eagle River first.
Super disappointed in the Anchorage housing market. Eagle River is ok in some places.
Have an interesting house or two in Chugiak.
Really have my eyes on a house in Palmer once I get up there on May 3rd/4th.
Have everything set for travel.
Going from Baton Rouge to Dallas.
Dallas to Amarillo.
Amarillo to Denver.
Denver to Idaho Falls. Spend the weekend in Idaho Falls and use it as a jumping point to Yellowstone.
Idaho Falls to Couer D'Alene,ID or Spokane,WA.
Couer D'Alene,ID/Spokane,WA to Bellingham,WA.
Taking the ferry to Haines,AK, then on my way to Anchorage the next two days!
The feds got me a 4 room cabin in the ferry. Question though! Are those private rooms?

That is an awesome road trip. You might fall in love with Haines, it's incredible.
Take time and enjoy, even if you try to take the same route again sometime in the future, it will not be nearly the same.

All cabins are private rooms. You'll enjoy having one, but if the weather is nice go sleep up on the solarium. It's an amazing experience.

It definitely should be enjoyable!
My dad retired on April 1st so he is going to make the road trip with me to take in the experience.
Should be a once in a lifetime adventure.

sweet that's what I thought.
I told my Dad he can have the room to himself one night if the weather is right I will definitely be on the solarium.
Looks like there would be a bunch of characters up there

Mainly college age people, ski bum types. You'll meet a lot of ski bums along the way. Good people. Might still be able to see the Aurora if the clouds break.

something definitely on my bucket list.
Just out of curiosity.
Do you know any good salmon/halibut/trout charters in the south central area?
Figured it'd be best to learn from those guys about the fishing up there

I'd go down to Homer or Seward, possibly Whittier for that. I can't say I could recommend any because it's been a few years since I was living in that area but just ask the locals and they'll tell you. Homer for Halibut and Seward or Whittier for Salmon.
If you get a chance, go to Seward for the 4th of July. They have the Mt. Marathon race and a lot of stuff going on. Have a brew or two at the Yukon Bar.

excellent advice
I'm leaving April 19th and I still think it hasn't hit me that I'm uprooting from south Louisiana to the Great White North

Your trip will be awesome. Driving is the way to go, you get to see how the landscape changes, it makes the move so much more real. You'll really love the ferry ride, the Blue Canoe we call them. The leg from Juneau to Haines is incredible, good chance to see humpbacks or orcas.

no shite. I'll definitely be on the look out!
Funny I have a Bachelor's in Oceanography, but haven't yet seen one of those up close in personal

Hatchers Pass is awesome. It's on the Palmer Fishook Rd just north of town. Has some old mines and has incredible hiking. This first picture, Palmer is in the valley in the background
Knik Glacier and River is in the area, lots of outdoor stuff to do there. State Fair is in Palmer every year, they have an ABL baseball team, might even see some LSU players up there. Klondike Mikes is a great place to grab a brew. It's only 8 miles from Wasilla, and just west of Wasilla is some great stream fishing and hunting.

there is one house that the realtor sent me that I really want.
The view is freaking fantastic...like frick it being a 40+mile/1 hour trip to work on a good day.
The view more than makes up for it

Do you know where it's located? I lived on the Fishook Road, which is on a bluff overlooking town and at the base of the Talkeetna Mts. Lazy Mountain Area is pretty cool as well.

it's on S. Phyl Ct. in the southwestern part of Palmer if I remember correctly

Springer Loop area, between the fairgrounds and the Matanuska River. Good location.
