Castrol GTX Magnatec Full Synthetic motor oil.

Full size SUV - 70k miles - occasionally tows a 21ft. bass boat or a shooting cart ? Other than that my daily commute is 20 miles.

The 5-Minute oil change place would love to see me back every 3000 miles. I'd like to go back every 5 years. What's a reasonable interval?

You can go a lot longer on synthetic I think.

I go about 5000 miles on conventional oil as opposed to the 3000 mile recommendation.

Have you considered checking your owners manual to see what it says?

When the computer on the vehicle tells me to.

I've noticed on my work vehicle, I drive a lot of highway miles, that it typically tells me to change it around the 8k-10k miles mark and I do that in about two months time. My truck sits in the driveway a lot, but when it's driven it is typically pulling a 20ft trailer with side by sides and 4 wheelers. The computer recognizes the strain on the engine and tells me to change it about every 5k.

I go 5k in my Jeep, and we go 10k on the synthetic in my wife's Toyota.

A real, modern day trained mechanic will agree that 5K interval is reasonable and 7.5K is about the largest conservative interval you should go. The 3000 mile interval is extremely conservative and geared towards people who either ignore their vehicles in all other ways or really used the hell out of them.

Read the manual. Do what it says to do. No more, no less. The only way you should sway from that is if you pull samples and have them checked, and that makes no sense on a regular vehicle.

The people who made the engine paid a lot of smart people a whole lot of money to figure that stuff out. They can't be too conservative because having more service events than the competition will cost sales, they can't be too aggressive because the engine won't last and that will cost sales.

I know you like to pull up the "don't get your advice from the Internet experts" card when it comes to guns, well I'm going to pull it here with oil changes. The people who built the engine and wrote the book are paid very well to know more about this stuff than the Internet does.

It may not be the same for more modern vehicles but I let the level tell me when to change. My engine eats about a quart every 3000 or so depending on usage, so when I've already added a quart but it's low again I just change it.

I run Royal Purple, I have read of people going 12k intervals on it, but I stick to 8k (my truck calls for 7500)

Really do what your manual says to do.

Your owners manual is the place to look but I would say no less than 5000 miles unless you are in a particularly harsh environment (lots of airborne dust/sand, for example). Probably 7500. If your 20 mile commute is one way and mostly highway, you may even extend that to 10K but if that 20 Miles is round trip, stop and go traffic, then 5K is better.
