I think its cool. I kinda like some tacticool crap sometimes It was a PITA for the smith to install the bolt catch pin becasue the skull was in the way some and my window pmags are a little snug. But I dig it...

I like it a lot, my last build was a little on the tacticool side itself.... didn't receive a lot of positive feedback in here but I like the way it turned out.

Finally putting my lower together... having trouble getting the roll pin for the bolt catch...

Any tips to get that thing in?

If you don't have roll pin holders/punches, I've done quite a few with just a set of channel locks. Tape the hell out of the receiver and the channel locks though, and even then you run a pretty high risk of scratching the receiver.

If you have the starter AND the pin punch set - and it may be too late for this.

Don't laugh - LUBE, LUBE, LUBE - I ultimately had to just get really aggressive with the first one and finally got it going.

If you don't have the starter, you can use tape and get it going with a regular punch. I would tape the hell out of that side of lower, whether you use the starter, the punch and tape OR any of the channel lock/pliers options.

I don't have the punches so I used a lot of painters tape to avoid scratches and I took a regular sized nail, cut the tip off with my needle nose pliers making it a flat end then used a hammer to tap it in and it worked with no problem.

That's for the feedback... it's my first time putting one together and I'm probably going at it half cocked since I don't have a vice ...

I just finished my first build and I didn't use a vice or punch kit. You'll get it with no trouble. It might take a little more time but that's it. Biggest trouble I had believe it or not was putting in the front takedown pin... gotta have patience.

Same here. And yes the front takedown is a PITA

If you can manage to put you first build together without losing part of the front takedown pin assembly.... it's a successful build.

The Wheeler tool (or equivalent) made it almost easy - not completely easy, but compared to the horror stories of E/R visits ("You'll put your eye out" ) and other mishaps, with Mrs. Midnight's help, that was the fastest part of the lower build.

I had more trouble with the buffer retention pin and spring and to hell with that damned bolt catch - I bought one of the German made hand vises for the future.

I was so close I shot the rear detent take spring across the room several times before I finally lost it ... it's gonna be in the room somewhere so hopefully I can find it

I would have to turn of the lights and scan the whole room with a flash light trying to catch the spring. The shower idea sounds solid though, I would've never thought of that.

I watched him for a cpl min trying to put it together. The skull head was getting in the way of his guid and other tools. I wound up leaving and he dot it in just not sure how. Looks a little mashed on the end so I'm sure it gave him hell.

You can get these on Amazon for so cheap, it's almost pointless not to have them. So many uses for roll pin punches and a complete hex key set.

The part that hurt the most for me to buy was the Geissele reaction rod. Expensive, but god damn if it doesn't make working on barrels, handguards, muzzle devices, gas blocks a million times easier.
