re: OT spinoff thread: the best sounds in the Outdoorsman's world. - smoked hog
The sound of a buck crashing after a good shot. An arrow making solid contact. The sing of drag from a good trout on light spinning gear. Rapids bubbling by your tent. A buck grunting as he blindly follows a scrape line. An old atv/outboard actually starting quickly on a cold morning...

re: 130" club - smoked hog
Only been back into deer hunting for about 4 years now. This one was from 2 years ago. Grossed 137 with a broken tine, would have been 142 if not for that. Let these two walk at under 30 yards this year only to have them ki...

That looks to be within a couple miles of my grandparents old trout dock. Man I miss that place. No better place to be on a hot summer day than sitting on a floating dock on the norfork....

My wife's aunt married a muslim when working in Morocco. When they come into town they rarely give more than a 30 minute heads up on whether or not he will be joining us or visiting other friends. He may or may not end up eating pork products. ...

re: Coon coyote trapping - smoked hog
Yeah I could go out and catch 50-100 coon in the next 2 weeks no problem. Only thing is I can't give them away. 2 years ago I averaged over $13 per coon, this year with stretched and dried I could only get a buck or so. Just not worth it. The market is terrible so I'm just going to let populat...

re: Coon coyote trapping - smoked hog
Offshore did one a couple of years ago and I did one the last couple. With a 6 month old and terrible fur prices I'm not trapping this year except for a few places for friends. I'll start in the next week or so, I'll try to take some pics as I go for coyote and for beaver....

re: Predator management after hunting season? - smoked hog
What kind of traps
Victor 3 DBL with PIT step down pans, best trap I've ever used. Every single time they snapped I had something in them. High pad catch, I may never go back to coilsprings again.
...

re: Predator management after hunting season? - smoked hog
Coons are really easy, dogproof and bucket sets can wipe out a bunch really quickly. Also pulls a bunch of possums. With those two out your nest success rates will be much higher. Coyotes and bobcat are easy once you get the hang but there is a learning curve. Last year in 5 days I managed to...

re: Boiling a Deer Skull - smoked hog
I prefer maceration simply because you can't damage the bone. However if you are going to cook make sure you simmer , not boil. Boiling can quickly go from perfect to damaged bone. It also can drive grease into the bone. Don't let bleach anywhere near it, same for washing soda. It will make the...
