I'm getting a little older and I don't like the kick on my 30.06. I might be getting soft but I feel like I always worry about the rectacle kicking in my eye. should I buy 270? Need some recommendations.

7mm-08 similar ballistics out to 500 yards. less kick than 270

Tikka T3x lite in 7mm-08 is just about all you need for a deer rifle in the south. 6.5 Creed would be fine too, just be careful with ammo.

Recoil mitigation is achieved 100% with move to a AR platform in any of the popular calibers such as .223, .308, .300 Blackout. Noticeable recoil is almost non-existent in the AR platforms.

.308, 7mm-08, 6.5 cm, 6.5 grendel, etc
.308 and 6.5 cm will have the most ammo available, but you have to be careful to get hunting ammo and not match ammo.

It may be beneficial to go to the doctor and get your T levels checked. My dad got the same way as you as he got older and as soon as he started taking extra T he went back to his old self.

What grain bullet are you shooting?

Nah. If .30-06 recoil is bothering you, you should go further down than that for an appreciable difference. You might just try some reduced recoil ammo for your ought 6 first. I think the are 125gr loads at moderate speeds. Should be drastically less recoil and still plenty horsepower for deer. You might also consider a muzzle brake. Much cheaper than a new rifle and again, drastic recoil reduction. You'll need to buy some of those good electronic earplugs to hunt with, which I recommend regardless. They can be had on sale for less than $100.
For an older man who I presume can shoot well, a .243 or even .223 is a great option with the right ammo and will be a major step down in recoil. When I get old and tired of recoil, I'll be doing all my big game hunting near and far with an AR15.

What grain bullets you shooting? Stepping down to a 150gr should put you close to 270 level recoil. Maybe add some weight to your gun? A pound or two makes a huge difference.
If your dead set on a new gun and I love new guns then go with a 6.5cr or 308, it’s way easier to get ammo for them than say a 7mm08 .

I have a Henry 6.5 Creed. Very little recoil and I love the gun.

Hornady makes a reduced recoil 125 gr 30-06 round. Before spending the money on a new gun try a box of those first.

25-06 with a monometal bullet is poison on whitetail. I’ve killed a pile with the ole “kids gun” 243 with 100gr interlocks also.

What ever you get make sure it’s a caliber you can easily get ammo for. I have a 270 wsm I can’t get ammo for unless I want to spend $95 for a box of 20!

I have an old Remington 700 ADL in .270. I installed a clamp on muzzle brake from Witt machine; very little recoil now.

Let the down votes begin!
Stay away from the 6.5 cripple more. Get a .308 or a 270. I have both and I prefer the .308 hands down. Both are bolt guns. Get a threaded barrel and put a muzzle break on it if you need.
Was at the camp this week and we had 3 deer were shot with a 6.5 and we had to call the dog tracker for each one. Not bad shot placement at all. Ole boy (the dog tracker) told me 243, 7mmx08 and the 6.5 are the 3 calibers that keep him busy.

Because people use the wrong ammo and the wrong shot placement. Kids in particular, but a lot of grown men just plain suck at shooting deer.
OP sounds like an older man who likely has a lot of hunting under his belt. He should be fine with good ammo and good shots.
