Was at the camp this week and we had 3 deer were shot with a 6.5 and we had to call the dog tracker for each one. Not bad shot placement at all.

How far did the deer travel after the shot? What bullets were used?

Recoil mitigation is achieved 100% with move to a AR platform in any of the popular calibers such as .223, .308, .300 Blackout. Noticeable recoil is almost non-existent in the AR platforms.
This year I have been smoking deer with a 6.5 Grendel in an AR-15 platform. Using the Barnes vortex tac tx ammo.

There is pretty much no recoil, and I haven’t had a deer make it farther than 30 yds.

Having had an extremely good blood dog who was busy for over a decade, I get it. Lots of terrible ammo out there, especially for the Creedmoor and .243

People who don’t like the 6.5 (I’m not a 6.5 guy because I have .308’s), 243 and so on are either pushing them beyond their limits with large animals, shooting the wrong bullets or both. I know it tends to be more expensive but shoot a bullet that’s stays together and it will kill them just as dead. Norma Oryx, partition, accubond, all of the Barnes lines, Teeminal Ascent and others in that class. If you’re stuck with affordable cup and core options, go get some American Whitetail or CoreLokts just go with the heaviest offering for the caliber, I’ve had great luck with that bullet in all my guns. Can’t be said enough, bullet selection and practice is the key. If you want a caliber with easy recoil and ammo on every shelf….. 308 with 165gr American Whitetail and call it good.

Or a .308. Unless you plan on shooting 200+ yards consistently, both are plenty enough. I started shooting a .308 a couple years ago and I shirt 2 8’s that went over 215 around 150 yards and neither ran more than 20 yards.

Sell it and buy a rifle with easily available ammo.

Rebarrel your oddball stuff thats impossible to get ammo for. It's much cheaper than getting a new rifle, and likely going to yield a much better rifle.

Ole boy (the dog tracker) told me 243, 7mmx08 and the 6.5 are the 3 calibers that keep him busy.

That's funny. The 243 has taken millions of deer without a dog. The 243 and 7mm08 are 100% because of shot placement. They only make hunting ammo for those.

The 6.5 CM is either shot placement or they're using a match grade bullet.

I love my 7-08 but the ammo is hard to find, expensive. Better off looking elsewhere.

Hornady Eldx 143gr

It’s all personal preference I just don’t care a 6.5 creedmore.

I don’t care for them either. At all. If you reload try 140 gr. Speer Hot Cor or Hornady Interlock - nothing fancy but dead reliable.

Crazy that I received 10 downvotes for the absolute best rifle system to mitigate recoil….308 in AR will do everything you need in the deer woods.

Would be interested to hear why someone disagrees based on more than personal bias towards a bolt gun.

Toting around an AR15 kinda sucks. Toting an AR10 around seems like torture. The ergonomics are terrible for hunting. They weigh a ton. They are expensive. They are obnoxiously loud. There's a whole lot to not like about them.

I like to bag on it as much as the next guy, but it's a damn fine hunting caliber. It just happens to suffer from a lot of crappy ammo available on shelves that people buy because it looks cool.

Is a glorified match bullet. Terrible choice for normal range deer hunting.

My son shoots hornady 140 gr ELD in his 6.5 Creedmoor and has killed every deer he has shot. None have run more than 30 yards. All about ammo and shot placement. I have never understood why people cry about the caliber so much. They just need to learn how and what to shoot.

Appreciate the feedback.

AR10’s used to be heavy across the board but now many are sub 7 lbs with scope such as those made by Roam, POF and SOLGW.

I disagree re: ergonomics but I also carried an AR type rifle for work in my military career for over 20 years and ARs are much easier to carry slung forward and easier to bring up on target from a slung position due to how slings are attached (QD/battle loop).

Re: loud, an AR with a basic bird cage flash hider compared to a bolt action firing a standard .223 round both have avg DB sound of 165-175.

I am sensitive to noises and recoil as well due to injuries I’ve sustained thus why I personally carry AR style rifles with suppressors when I hunt.

As the OP is recoil sensitive, hopefully this helps some.

This is the only gun I’ve hunted with for the last 10 years. My 9 year old son shot a doe with it yesterday, this is the result with good shot placement
