How is this a scaled down version of catch shares?

Maybe. no one knows.

If this thing "works", then who is to say a lottery isn't going to happen? I put works in quotes because the council be likely decide it doesn't work, and they will retain the power.

It's all so damn stupid.

That's the way I see it. When put into full action of all anglers, they would be able to keep up with real time data of total catch and can base the season closure off of that. With a summer of hurricanes and bad weather, we would be nowhere near our share of catch so the state could keep the season open all year. It allows them to be flexible.

But this is Louisiana we are talking about. And unfortunately politics gets involved and so does money. So Bug eyes could easily spin this and screw us over like the Feds do.

And how about the weather forecast for our 3 day season, it's gonna be blowing it's arse off and the Gulf Council will still say we exceeded the catch.

It's nothing real new, just new for us Many states work on real time quotas whether it be for salmon or black bears. Once the quota is met, it's over

Of course this is louisiana and they have to spoon feed us. We were years behind on actually tagging deer and we still have people that refuse to report harvest

Once again you're 100% correct headedwest.

It's to allow for bad weather and unfishable days if the program trial is successful

I guess that's why it's hard for me to get worked up over it either way. NOAA is still just gonna say this doesn't satisfy their data collection standards, and it's unusable for their harvest report or stock assessment.

So, under this program, if I receive one of the 150, does that mean I can share it with the 5 people I'm going offshore with?

Absolutely false. People with that mindset are the result of overreaching policy.

Yes and it's not many fish if you break it down. 25000 divided by 150 anglers is only 167 lbs of snapper

Masson fires you up by saying words like "unlimited access" in his article and people get mad before they actually read it

The story could have read something mentioning "Louisiana pilot program for red snapper harvest"

Or "150 anglers to be selected for pilot study for red snapper"

But that doesn't fire anyone up and he gets less clicks on the website

Exactly. But he will be the first to post exactly which rigs and spots people are catching fish on.

House passed a resolution asking WLF to cancel the pilot program.

It's just a resolution, LDWF doesn't care what legislature says, they don't need anything from them, they are self funded

Resolutions are pretty toothless. Plus the Turtle is mad because those mean old legislators won't let him tax the shite out of everyone. If they insist on doing this pilot, then elected officials and their immediate families should not be able to participate

I'm just sad that I purchased a lifetime license a few years back, otherwise I'd consider going outlaw. What in the hell is LDWF going to do? They can't catch everyone who doesn't have a license and if they get hurt in the pocketbook, less funds to put folks out to catch the outlaws. This whole episode has really soured me on an otherwise good state department.
