It's to simply provide the data needed to tell the Feds to shove it.
Posted on 5/25/17 at 9:16 pm to BigHoss
Explain to me how this is any different that giving the commercial guys their "quota" you don't agree with that, correct? This is the same thing. This fishery is doomed.

So then why fight it? If it won't get us anywhere
Posted on 5/25/17 at 9:18 pm to 34venture
Because this is a pilot program to prove to the Feds that we can manage it.
Posted on 5/25/17 at 9:18 pm to BigHoss
They knowndamn good and well we can manage it, this won't change a thing.

That's how I am interpreting it

The plan is to take days away from the state season and give the functional/poundage equivalent of those days to only some people who can then go fish in otherwise closed federal waters.
Those few guys then report their catch data.
Come on, man.
Putting the unconstitutionality of this aside, the feds and the state have a ton of data already, and people employed by them to obtain the data, and the ability to obtain this same data from every single angler.

I don't know, our head marine fisheries manager for the state got fired and almost went to jail. I don't think the Feds think too highly of our management

They have a ton of data. But everyone is complaining about it. So they offer more data. Everyone complains about it.
What is your solution?

Likely.
God forbid the state tries something to try and help the greater good of the fishery. It may or may not work, but nothing else has worked this far, so hell let's see where this takes us.

To hell with the Feds, they're not stupid....they know exactly what the score is. They're a lot of things, stupid isn't one of them.

BigHoss,
From what I read, this app/reporting will be more detailed than ROLP. The participants will report locations, and amount/avg size of throw backs. Think they want this to show how many snapper out there. But don't get why only 150. Do 1000 and that's still only 5% of the total permit holders.
I think they should have given certain areas better chance at getting some. Over here to the west of the state, state snapper DONT exist. It's only 15 ft deep out there at 9 miles. Most of participants will be Venice/grand isle.
I also don't think it gives them a "big advantage" as in they can't keep state snapper on the same trip so it's not like they can double up every day.

I agree. It has its problems. But they had to start somewhere.
I'm not knighting for the program. I think it's a step in the right direction, I just wish people would give it a chance and form their own opinions rather than let Todd Masson and the CCA make it for them.

Also if you did 1000, you would hear. Why not 2000.
And if you took 5% people would be even more pissed.
I know larger numbers where thrown around. But they tried to find a happy median

Reinstate the rolp reporting requirements, for one. Hell, they even had/have a phone app for that already.
Posted on 5/25/17 at 9:40 pm to TheCurmudgeon
It's still out there so no reinstatement.
Last year snapper season was 272 days. That equals out to roughly 4300 lbs of snapper a person could catch in the state season if they hit their limit every day. I don't see a huge deal if some people are given a chance to catch 167 lbs of that 4300 lbs in federal waters. If state reporting is successful, everyone can catch their limits outside of 9 miles.
Trust me, I hate where we are in the fight. I grew up with snapper fishing every weekend and it pisses me off to see where we are today. But let's just give this a chance. If it's a shite show after the first year, then lets bash it. But I'm all for trying something new to help towards state management

Agreed.
It seems the brash over reactions have subsided since the facts of the program were posted

The Feds should have all the info they need. Don't they see the poundage the commercials are pulling in?
