I have a huge live oak that fell in the woods on my property. Ive heard that live oak makes great firewood but it is a bitch to split. any chance I could find someone to come cut it up for firewood? Im dreading dealing with this because this tree is fricking huge.

What little I've used has been great. Never tried to split it.

I've done it and even with decent hydraulic splitter it's a PITA, especially near knots or branch offshoots. Burns as good as any well dried oak.

How my 77 year old dad would handle this: Cut up the tree for firewood and then split it all, by hand, with a double bladed ax. All this while ignoring the maul I bought for him and refusing to even discuss renting a log splitter.

How I would handle this: Set tree on fire.

Edit to add: No, I wouldn't. I would just walk around tree when I went that way and watch it slowly rot over the years.

Sounds like my dad. When I rented a ride-on trencher to install 400' of 3" pipe for electrical service, he brought a shovel and called me crazy (was thinking lazy). I almost offered him a teaspoon.

It's a very twisted grained oak. It can be spilt hard yes but very manageable. Make sure if you do it by hand to stack the pieces when you spilt them. Makes it easier. Or just rent a good splitter.

BTW I'm the man's Dad in post above. Spilling wood is a challenge to me, well used to be I'm older now hahahahaha.

Live oak sucks to split because it usually has knots all in it, and the grain usually twists around. It also barely burns when it gets rotten

Either way, wood is wood. It's good exercise

Make sure you have about 5 chains for your chain saw. That stuff is very hard to cut and harder to split. A guy dropped off a 20 foot trailer full of logs to our camp last year from a tree they cut in his yard and gave it to us for free. After we started cutting it I realized why.

cut it up and let it dry for a few months, then split it.

IMO it is okay firewood. I have burned a bunch from an ice story a few years ago. it burns but doesn't throw out a huge flame, it kind of just glows red puts out heat but doesn't make the typical huge fire you are used to with other oak varieties.

Also its a son of a bitch to split!

I have seen sparks fly off the wood when putting a chain saw on it. The lumber from live oaks was once used for hull of ships.
