Ditched my Mosin Nagant and went and hand picked a field grade M1 from the CMP store in Anniston. Springfield 1943 receiver with original wartime stock, finish is still in good shape, and a barrel with some weird marking I have yet to identify. :freedomboner:

Garand guys...any ammo recommendations?

you want ball ammo
privi partizan makes a 30/06 round loaded slightly cooler that is also safe
look around the net sometimes sgammo and others have genuine ball on enbloc clips

when you find it buy all you can

$630. Prices are on the CMP website for the various grades. I actually went with the intention of getting a service grade (good to very good condition vs. field grade which is fair to good), but all of those had new CMP stocks and I was looking for something original. Even though this stock has a few dings and gouges, the fact that it was produced with the same receiver and carried around by some GI in Europe or the Pacific is way more meaningful to me than having a brand new one.

I will say that I would advise against mail ordering a field grade sight unseen because most of those rifles were pretty rough. All the service grades were nice though.

That's a nice pickup. Once I get all my 'needed' firearms, I'm gonna start getting ww2 era guns.

Garand is at the top of my list. Along with a combat 1911, obviously.

How long did it take to get it out of the door?

Trying to decide if I can pick one up during a trip to Birmingham.

That is real nice, OP. I'm jealous.

Federal makes a loading for the M-1, it's part of their American Eagle lineup.

You can also get Winchester White Box for the M-1.

Thanks for the info, fellas.

Kato, it only took about 30 minutes to process once I picked it out. If you're in Birmingham you could easily do it in 3-4 hours (including an hour each way for travel).

You have to pay local sales tax if you take it with you, but they'll ship it for free to avoid that.

For $730 you can have a service grade (basically guaranteed a really nice rifle) delivered to your door.

Federal and Hornady make M1 Garand specific ammo. I no longer use mil-surp ammo as what is available isn't good or is copper plated steel-jacket stuff. I reload for my Garand too. My Garand is an unissued post-war SA that has the accuracy proofing mark.
