Welcome to the OB. You've come to the best place to get a warm welcome with some quality information.

quote:

All BS aside, there are some great threads on here that debate the best rifle caliber to use between a 308, 270, or 30-06.

270 and 30-06 use the exact same case. The only place they differ is in the size of the bullet. The .270 is a .277"/6.8mm sized bullet and the 30-06 uses a .308"/7.62mm bullet. The 270 will shoot a bit flatter at longer distances but a 30-06 can shoot heavier ammo if you needed to go mule deer or elk hunting. For Louisiana, either would be great.

308 is also very common and a great whitetail round. It is just a smidgen below 30-06 in terms of velocity in power but the whitetail won't be able to tell the difference. I wouldn't consider other rounds that use a 308 parent case (243, 260, 7mm-08, etc.) because they'll be harder to find in stores.

Comparing the 308 to the 30-06 or 270 option, the main difference you'll see is the distance of the action. It has a short action since the case is a bit shorter (30-06 = 63mm long, 308 = 51mm long) compared to 30-06 or 270. But in terms of power, like I mentioned earlier, they're all pretty close.

The easiest rounds to find for deer will be 270, 30-06, and 308.

Another option could be buying another barrel for any of your shotguns. If you had a Remington 870 that would be very cheap and simple but the A-5 may be a bit more expensive for an extra barrel.

I agree with Clames that the Ruger American is one of the best deals out there. Ruger has really been putting out some great products in recent years.

Any other questions, feel free to return back.

Thanks. I'm familiar enough with guns as far as caliber. I've shot a handful of them with shooting buddies over the years. The most fun was a .45-70 that bruised me worse than shooting clays all day. And in just 5 shots.

I'm sure I'll bump this in a few months when I get that rifle itch.

I'd get a 308 or 7mm-08. I own both and an .06, 7Mag, and .35 whelen. most of the time I use my crossbow, but when I don't, I grab the 7-08. less recoil and plenty of thump for any deer.

It's just a saying that's been passed down to me. I shoot a remington 700 270 that I bought at walmart for 250 about 10 years ago. I put a really nice leupold scope on it that cost me right at 800. Best investment of my life. Pulls in plenty light for early morning or dusk shots. All that was meant from the statement is from my experience, the scope is way more important than the rifle.

I just purchased my Browning X-bolt Stainless Stalker Carbon Fiber in 30-06. I went with Meopta Meopro 4-12x50 (thanks 4LSU ). I'll tell you one thing. That is the sweetest shooting high caliber rifle that I've ever shot. Gun hardly kicks and is extremely accurate. I've been really impressed with the Meopta scope too

I'm guessing I also need an F-150 to go with the 30-06. I mean if Blake Shelton says it, and the official truck of the OB is a Ford, it must be good!

Clean up the A-5's and use them (if they are in good shape). They are great guns. I'm looking at Sweet Sixteen's right now.

Then find a good used or new old stock Browning A-Bolt II in 30-06 (synthetic/matte are usually the least expensive). Can probably be had for about $500.00. Put a Burris scope on it, and you have a lifetime hunting rig for under $750.00.

They're in decent shape. A couple of cosmetic issues on the stocks, but they were used for hunting by my dad and grandfather. Just a couple of light scratches. They're Belgium, and I have a Light Twelve and a Sweet Sixteen.

Great firearms. Let me know if you want to sell them.

If you need something bigger (3" or 3.5") for ducks/geese, look at the Stoegers. I bought an M3500 when they first came out for about $450.00. I think they can be had for around $600.00 now, and the M3000 for $500.00. I've never had any trouble with mine, and the waterfowl don't know the difference between it and its Italian cousins.

10-4-dont blame you.

The one my father had, that I first duck hunted with, was ruined by my brother. Wish I had it back.

Bump. Situations have changed since I started this back in the spring. My other grandfather passed back in April, and my Uncle told me to take whichever of his guns that I want, and we would divide the rest up between his grandson and his son-in-law. Neither of my brother-in-laws hunt or would even have anything to do with a rifle. I'm pretty sure there is a .22 rifle, and maybe a 30 caliber or 30-06. Honestly, out of all the times I was there over the past 34 years, I never took them out of his case to look at them closely. About 5-6 years ago he was showing me one of them, but it was an old shotgun.

So the rifle situation may be taken care of, and I would enjoy using another "family" gun, so to speak.

But the main reason I'm bumping this is that a group of guys in my sunday school class is planning a quail hunt. We do these big cookout things 2-3 times a year. Someone comes to speak to the group, and we usually end the night with cigars and alcohol around a campfire. We nixed the alcohol about a year ago because one of the guys is in AA, but still smoke cigars and sit around talking about all kinds of things. The last one was in May at a guy's property on a lake. We did a big fish fry and had over 30 guys there. Great time.

But the next event is going to be in Central AL at a place that does Quail hunts. The idea is that we get together and eat breakfast, and the ones that want to hunt can hunt, the ones that want to sit around and watch college football early games can do that, and the ones that want to shoot skeet can do that. I was planning on taking my 12 and 16 with me, in case someone needs one to borrow. What type of shot do you guys use when quail hunting?

You will need the following firearms to fit in around here:
Taurus Judge (Official Zombie blaster of the OB)
.243 Winchester (Official whitetail slayer of the OB)
Glock 19 (Official pistol of the OB for practical OB'ers)
Tikka Model T3 in any caliber they offer (Official long rifle of the OB).

I haven't been here very long, but it's good to know I've got 4/4 of the official OB guns.

Sounding really nice! keep going (I like fried fish, shooting guns, cigars, and bourbon)

Don't let someone borrow an heirloom gun. If something were to happen to it regardless of fault there will be hard feelings.

Use the 16 with either 6 or 7.5 shot (I'd lean toward the 6)

ETA: really sorry to hear about your granddaddy.
