I'm wanting to get into hunting - Suggestions on firearms?

My dad wasn't much of a hunter. I went turkey and deer hunting with uncles and friends when I was younger, but then I discovered girls in my teens and never had time anymore, especially since Dad wasn't taking me hunting. We always went fishing instead.
Lately I've been getting an itch to get into it. Most of my guns are just handguns. I do have a pair of old Browning A-5s that were my grandfathers, and I know I could use the 12 for bird hunting, but what other game (until I decide if I want a rifle) could be taken with a 12? Does anyone hunt deer with them anymore? What about hogs?
I have some friends that have offered to take me a couple of times, but I haven't taken them up on it yet. For the time being I'm not going to make any gun purchases, until I see what its like and what I would want. But just wondering what all a shotgun would allow me to hunt. Also, my Uncle has some land in Southwest Alabama and said any time I want to come down during hunting season and he would get me in a stand or in a shooting house. I'd feel comfortable borrowing his rifle for that, but wouldn't feel comfortable borrowing a friend's, if that makes any sense.

Sounds like deer hunting is on the table as something in your future with options of places to hunt. Rifle is a good gun to buy. You also need to plan now, you are going to need to take a hunter's education class for a hunting license.

You can hunt pretty much anything with a 12 gauge 3" gun. Your range is prett limited for deer/hogs though, maybe 100 yds at best. If you plan on hunting thick swamp that may be fine though. If you're hunting deer/hogs over a field or right of way you will want to get a rifle as well, but a 12 gauge will kill just about any animal that you can hunt in LA.

Yeah, I've got plenty of time before next season. I'm less than 3 hours from my Uncle, so it would be an easy weekend or mid-week trip. And it is still in Alabama, so I'm guessing a license would be good anywhere in the state, even if I got one here in Birmingham?
Yeah I know I'll eventually get a rifle, but I just want to go a few times first to see what conditions I would be hunting in and what I would want to buy. Just hard to justify the cost until I see if it is something I want to get into more.

agree, the shotgun will kill anything. But the range is limited. There are plenty budget rifles out there now in the $350 range like savage axis with a scope. 270, 30-06, or 308. One rifle purches and you are set for everything since you already have the 12ga for birds.

Most if not all states require a hunter's education class before they will sell you a hunting license. Start looking into that now and see when and there there are offered near you. In Louisiana they are free and you can learn a good bit of info from the class.

It would most likely be in Alabama. Wooded areas, mostly old oaks and pines. Nothing too thick. Small green fields with shooting houses. None of them are over 75-100 yards across.

Welcome aboard.
You will need the following firearms to fit in around here:
Taurus Judge (Official Zombie blaster of the OB)
.243 Winchester (Official whitetail slayer of the OB)
Glock 19 (Official pistol of the OB for practical OB'ers)
Tikka Model T3 in any caliber they offer (Official long rifle of the OB). This one is somewhat redundant from the .243 but both are required for a NEWBie.

i wouldnt feel comfortable shooting buckshot with a 12ga at deer more than 50yards myself. Too much margin for error. But plenty of deer have been killed with buckshot. It just sucks to have a deer at 100yards and your holding a shotgun, when you know a rifle would be a cake shot

All BS aside, there are some great threads on here that debate the best rifle caliber to use between a 308, 270, or 30-06.
Search for these threads for a rifle.
As far as a shotgun goes, a beginner sportsman cannot go wrong with a Remington 870 in 12 gauge.

Will an XD do for the Glock 19?

My son just got through with the hunter education and he did it all on line. A field day used to be required but not anymore.
Your good on guns with a 12 guage, it will kill anything in north America that I can think of, if you get close enough.

You can pick up a WW2 Mauser in 7mm or .308 for under 200 bucks. You can reach out and touch something fairly easily with it out to 300 yards with just a 4x scope.
If you ever want to part with an A5, and it's a belgium, they are my favorite shotgun ever.
If you're feeling really cheap, a sub 130$ mosin nagant is a great gun for deer as well.
During the off-season, you can grab deer rifles for cheap on louisiana sportsman.

We hunt in Mississippi on longer food plots so we use rifles. My whole family shoots a 270 rifle. My dad and brother shoot savag, I shoot a remington. Remember this statement if you plan ok going with a rifle, 200 dollar gun 1200 dollar scope. This is what you need to do to We hunt in Mississippi on longer food plots so we use rifles. This is what you need to do to prepare
1) hunters education
2) purchase gun, score, practice
3) find a lease and a good 4 wheeler.
4) read up on how to scout, set up stands, etc.
5) learn how to skin a deer so that you don't mess up any good meat. Shot placement is very important in this aspect. Some hunters swear by the shoulder, I prefer right behind it.
6) enjoy yourself, deer hunting requires a lot of patience and judgement. You'll learn as you go. It's fun, relaxing, and a great thing to pass down to.your kids, nephews, etc.

Yeah I'm not parting with either of them. They were my grandfathers and will be passed on to my son.

Ruger American .30-06
Nikon ProStaff
Picked up the bipod from Ruger and filled the stock with Shore 10 silicone which eliminated that hollow feel these budget rifles have and shifted the weight balance back a bit. I think I'll spend the $113 on a Boyd laminate wood stock this summer. Add a little bit more weight but should be a very solid rifle for less than $700 invested.

I get the point on investing in quality glass, but this is pretty asinine. You dont need a $1200 scope. Anything over $500 will be very nice and get the job done. What do you think the majority on here would rather...
-Weatherby VS2 Deluxe ($900) & Vortex Viper HS ($500)
or
-Remington 783 Synthetic ($285) & Swarovski Z3 4-12x50 ($1240)
I'd take the great rifle with quality glass all day over the junk rifle with elite glass.
