I can get the boat trailer in the water pretty good, but I have a hell of a time sometimes getting the boat onto the trailer. Doesn't help that the launch I use most of the time is in a bayou with terrible current, but I'll admit I'm not good at it.

This is a really good tip.

This. DO NOT use the rear view unless there is no other possible way. As Mung said, gate down if you have to and as long as it will not get hit by the jack extension.

I was the same way, until I moved a few times. I was helping my brother in law move, and we had a U-Haul behind my Grand Cherokee. They live on a hill, and all of the townhouses had short driveways so no room to really pull in and back it out. I had to end up backing the trailer down this hill, maybe 250-300 feet. You get the hang of it pretty quick when doing something like that. Backing it to the garage to unload when we got to the new place was a breeze. So get out and practice. You only back it up a very small percentage of the time you're pulling it, so you have to get used to it.

I can back up trailers decently well, not a total pro, if I can turn around.
I can not for the life of me use mirrors.

I turn around. Hand on top of wheel, opposite direction is where boat will go. Small corrections

This is what my old man would tell me every time I would have trouble backing up a trailer growing up

take it slow.

THIS!

If people would stop trying to fly down a ramp, backwards, with a trailer, the whole process would go a lot faster. It is much easier to make minor corrections at a slow pace.

Yep and don't be afraid to stop, put it in drive, pull forward a little and start over.....you will save time in the long run.

Edit: you need to edit the sucking dick part.......seriously

i just look back. growing up thats how my dad did it and thats how i was taught. you can also see a lot more of your surroundings (if someone for whatever reason walks behind your rig) etc.

I suck at it also........because I just don't frequently pull a trailer.

I can do it when I have to.........just no as proficient as others.

With your hand placed at the bottom of the steering wheel, the direction you turn the wheel is the direction the trailer will want to go

Tried this the other day worked great for fine tuning

I turn around and look through the back glass with the tailgate down so I can see the trailer wheels.

I can do it looking through the mirrors if I have to, but I do it way faster my way with fewer corrections.

ETA: AlxTgr and Mung are steering you right.

This. Use my mirrors when I'm closing in the last few feet

Tandem axles are soooo much easier. Try to practice with a utility trailer (5x8) and you can back anything straight. It's all about the pivot and small changes.

As everyone else said, practice in a large parking lot at night. My wife wanted to learn and we got in one of our worst fights ever...she sped off and went to Cabelas...came back 3 hrs later and backed it in driveway perfectly.

I absolutely LOVE the jealous looks when she backs the Nautic Star at the boat launch now!!

But I'll just come right out and say it, I suck dick at backing up a trailer. My dad never had a boat or trailer when I was growing up, so I never got practice. Now I've got my own boat and I only go to the launch on week days when nobody is around to witness my epic failures.

What tips do you have for me?

First off...leave the dick sucking at home...I don't want to see that at a boat launch..

Secondly...slow, don't oversteer are all good directions. When in doubt...pull up straighten up and try again.

I only recently learned to get good at it...borrowed a co-workers little trailer...and had to put it between two trees to load up the house when we moved. It was a learning experience..

I guess my man card is pulled too...my wife backed up a lot more trailers than I did...she was in 4H/FFA in HS and showed pigs...so that's where her experience came from...but those trees messed her up...she wasn't that fine tuned.

This is how I learned to back up a trailer.

This method works really well when using your mirrors but its a little more difficult when turning around.

It takes practice. Be take your time.

Turn around in your seat and do it. I can go much faster that way. Also, some people have those PVC pipes to aid lining up the boat on the trailer. They help if your truck is lifted

Take it to a mall parking lot or empty parking lot with a couple of orange cones and practice - don't practice at the boat ramp
