But I'll just come right out and say it, I suck dick at backing up a trailer. My dad never had a boat or trailer when I was growing up, so I never got practice. Now I've got my own boat and I only go to the launch on week days when nobody is around to witness my epic failures.

What tips do you have for me?

Quit using the back up camera and take it slow.

Learn to use your mirrors.

With your hand placed at the bottom of the steering wheel, the direction you turn the wheel is the direction the trailer will want to go.

Take your time, practice, try not to get flustered, and find what works for you.

Edit: Also, small corrections can go a long way.

As everyone was ripping on the backup steering knob, I was sitting quietly thinking "Thank you baby Jesus"

Find an empty parking lot late at night and practice.

I don't use my mirrors only. I have to twist around and look out the back window while watching the tire on the passenger side through the passenger side mirror.

Just act drunk when you get out the truck. That is what I do when launching my kayak with my Honda Element. It's one thing to be a sissy nancy boy but another to just had 5 too many.

My Dad always told me to not oversteer and that has actually helped. When I find myself losing it, it is because I am turning too much.

Take your time as well, so what if it takes an extra 30 seconds the fish and water will still be there for everyone.

Practice in a big parking lot away from everyone OR practice backing into your driveway.

Other tips:

Open the door and look towards the rear

Drive in frontwards sorry too easy

Longer trailers are actually easier as they react slower to wheel input.

Backing up a trailer is easy. Go slow and turn around when your backing it up. You can see what direction the trailer is going when you start slow and once it is in a good direction you can gas it. It is so freaking simple.

You have to pull up a lot farther than you think to correct a mistake.

It's both an ART and a Science... I was terrible too, but with a lot of practice I have gotten better.

Grew up in a nursery and can back up a trailer like a champ. I can do it with ease with the mirrors, but I prefer to look behind me when I back up. Not sure if thats from doing it most of my life on tractors or easier for everyone that way. One thing will make you better though, time and practice. That said, do it on your own time, not at the ramp
